Garrett County
Garrett County () is the westernmost county of the U.S. state of Maryland, completely within the Appalachian Mountains. As of the 2020 United States census, the population was 28,806, making it the third-least populous county in Maryland. Its county seat is Oakland. The county was named for John Work Garrett (1820–1884), president of the Baltimore and Ohio Railroad. Created from Allegany County in 1872, it was the last county to be formed in the state. The county is part of the Western Maryland region of the state. Garrett County is bordered by four West Virginia counties and to the north the Maryland–Pennsylvania boundary known as the Mason–Dixon line. The eastern border with Allegany County was defined by the Bauer Report, submitted to Governor Lloyd Lowndes, Jr. on November 9, 1898. Oakland, Maryland
Oakland is a town in Garrett County, Maryland, United States, and its county seat. The population was 1,851 at the 2020 United States census, 2020 census. It is near Deep Creek Lake and the Wisp Ski Resort. History Oakland was formally incorporated as a town in 1862. The town is home to the historic Baltimore and Ohio Railroad Oakland station (Maryland), Oakland Station, which was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1973 and restored in the 2000s. Today, the station is mainly used for special organizations or gatherings, although trains still run on tracks behind the station. A gift shop is located within the station. Seasonal decorations and events, such as the town Christmas tree, are located at the station. Main Street comprises historic two to four-story edifices with retail businesses, such as a theatre, museum, book store, pharmacy, antique shops, clothing stores and banks. Hoye-Crest
Hoye-Crest is a summit along Backbone Mountain just inside of Garrett County, Maryland. It is the highest natural point in Maryland at an elevation of . The location, named for Captain Charles E. Hoye (1876–1951), founder of the Garrett County Historical Society, offers a view of the North Branch Potomac River valley to the east. The Maryland Historical Society placed a historical marker at the summit during a dedication ceremony in September 1952. Accessing Hoye-Crest There is no vehicular access to Hoye-Crest. The best route by foot is a hike along the Maryland High Point Trail, from a point along U.S. Route 219 just south of Silver Lake, West Virginia at . Cumberland ( ) is an area of North West England which was historically a county. The county was bordered by Northumberland to the north-east, County Durham to the east, Westmorland to the south-east, Lancashire to the south, and the Scottish counties of Dumfriesshire and Roxburghshire to the north. Maryland's 6th Congressional District
Maryland's 6th congressional district elects a representative to the United States House of Representatives from the northwest part of the state. The district comprises all of Garrett, Allegany, Frederick, and Washington counties as well as a portion of Montgomery County. April McClain Delaney ( D) is its current representative. The previous boundaries of the district were the subject of a Supreme Court lawsuit over partisan gerrymandering.
