Garliestown F.C.
Garliestown Football Club was an association football club from the village of Garlieston, Wigtownshire. History The club claimed a foundation date of 1878, although it had a fitful existence for its first few years, being an irregular entrant to the Churchill Cup from 1881 and twice entering the Southern Counties Cup, in the competition's first season of 1891–92 and again in 1895–96, but scratching both times. The club's name was generally rendered as Garliestown until at least 1906, the Garlieston spelling becoming more common from 1907. The club was one of the most successful in its county, winning the Wigtownshire Cup three consecutive seasons (1892–93 to 1894–95), the final time with a remarkable 8–5 win over Kirkcowan in the final at Stranraer. Garlieston ( gd, Baile Gheàrr Lios, IPA: �paləʝeaːᵲʎis̪ is a small planned coastal village in the historical county of Wigtownshire in Dumfries and Galloway, south west Scotland. It was founded in the mid 18th century by Lord Garlies, later 6th Earl of Galloway. Location and history The village lies northwest of Whithorn and a few miles north of Cruggleton Castle which was abandoned in the 17th century. The former seat of the Earls of Galloway, Galloway House, is situated on the edge of the village, with the settlement being planned along Georgian lines. The port became an important import point for goods being brought into the Machars throughout the 19th and early 20th centuries. In 1876 the Wigtownshire Railway was extended to the settlement and goods flowed regularly through the port, with the maritime industries of shipbuilding and associated activities taking place in the village. Sir Herbert Eustace Maxwell, 7th Baronet, (8 January 1845 – 30 October 1937) was a Scottish novelist, essayist, artist, antiquarian, horticulturalist, prominent salmon angler and author of books on angling and Conservative politician who sat in the House of Commons from 1880 to 1906. Randolph Henry Stewart, 11th Earl of Galloway (14 October 1836 – 7 February 1920) was a Scottish first-class cricketer and British Army officer. Early life The son of Randolph Stewart, 9th Earl of Galloway and his wife, Lady Harriett Blanche Somerset, he was born at Galloway House in October 1836. He was educated at Harrow School. He played first-class cricket for the Gentlemen of England in 1856, making two appearances against the Gentlemen of Surrey and Sussex at Lord's and the Gentlemen of Kent and Sussex at Canterbury. Career After leaving Harrow, Stewart enlisted in the British Army as an ensign in the 42nd Highlanders in March 1855, with promotion to the rank of lieutenant coming without purchase in August 1855.
