Garda Regional Support Unit
Armed Support Units (ASU) () are specialist regional firearms units of the ''Garda Síochána'', the national police force of Ireland. Based in all four Garda regions in the country, Gardaí attached to an ASU unit carry a combination of lethal firearms and non-lethal weapons, as opposed to regular uniformed Gardaí, who are unarmed, and detective gardaí, who are armed but not assigned to ASU roles. The ASU is under the command of the Special Tactics and Operational Command alongside the Garda Emergency Response Unit (ERU). Armed Support Units were known as Regional Support Units (RSU) when first established in 2008. Special Detective Unit
The Special Detective Unit (SDU) () is the main domestic security agency of the ''Garda Síochána'', the national police force of Ireland, under the aegis of the Crime & Security Branch (CSB). It is the primary counter-terrorism and counter-espionage investigative unit within the state. The Special Detective Unit superseded the Special Branch (which they are still commonly referred to as), which itself replaced the older Criminal Investigation Department (CID), which was founded in 1921. 2023 Dublin Unrest
On the evening of 23 November 2023, a riot took place in Dublin, Ireland, and involved multiple incidents of vandalism, arson, and looting in the city centre as well as assaults on Garda Síochána, Gardaí (Irish police) and members of the public. Killing Of George Nkencho
On 30 December 2020, the Garda Armed Support Unit shot 27-year-old George Nkencho in Clonee on the Dublin–Meath border, after graduated attempts to detain him failed. He had allegedly assaulted a shop staff member and threatened others with a knife.
