Crime in Toronto has been low in comparison to other major cities. In 2024, a ranking of 60 large cities by ''The Economist'' ranked Toronto as the 6th safest major city in the world, and the safest major city in North America. In the same year, CEOWORLD magazine, which includes some major medium-sized cities, ranked Toronto as the 160th safest city in the world, running behind several other major cities including Taipei, Munich, and Jerusalem, as well as, in Canada, Quebec City and Ottawa, but safer than most cities in the United States. Even though Toronto is the fourth largest city in North America, it has a relatively low homicide rate that has fluctuated over the 2010s decade between 2.1 and 3.8 per 100,000 people. Sheppard Avenue is an east–west principal arterial road in Toronto, Ontario, Canada. Jane Street (Toronto)
Jane Street is a major north-south thoroughfare in Toronto, Ontario, Canada. The 5th concession west of Yonge Street, the road begins at Bloor Street and continues north into York Region, before ending in the Holland Marsh in King Township. The street passes through several neighbourhoods and landmarks; such as Bloor West Village, Jane and Finch, Vaughan Mills, and Canada's Wonderland. Jane Street is one of the most congested roads in the Greater Toronto Area, with the Toronto Transit Commission (TTC) bus routes serving the street being among the system's busiest. North York
North York is a former township and city and is now one of the six administrative districts of Toronto, Ontario, Canada. Boxing Day Shooting
The Boxing Day shooting was a Canadian gang-related shooting which occurred on December 26, 2005, on Toronto's Yonge Street, resulting in the death of 15-year-old student Jane Creba. Six other bystanders—four men and two women—were wounded. The incident took place on one of Toronto's most crowded streets on the very busy shopping day, just a few blocks north of the Toronto Eaton Centre. The story generated national news coverage in Canada and influenced the then-underway 2006 federal election campaign on the issues of gun crime and street violence. Dudley Laws (May 7, 1934March 24, 2011) was a Canadian civil rights activist and executive director of the Black Action Defence Committee. Laws was born in Saint Thomas Parish, Jamaica, to parents Ezekiel and Agatha Laws, and was a brother to six other siblings. A welder and mechanic by trade, he worked at Standard Engineering Works until he emigrated to the United Kingdom in 1955 and became involved in defending the West Indian community.
