John Gwyn Jeffreys
John Gwyn Jeffreys FRS (18 January 1809 – 21 January 1885) was a British conchologist and malacologist. Biography John Gwyn Jeffreys was born on 18 January 1809, at Swansea, Wales. He was the eldest son of J. Jeffreys of Fynone, Glamorgan. Jeffreys was educated in Swansea at the Bishop Gore School (Swansea Grammar School). From the age of seventeen, he was an apprentice to one of the principal solicitors of Swansea, before going to London, where he qualified as a barrister in 1838. Jeffreys worked as a solicitor in Swansea until 1856, when he was called to the bar in London. But his greater passion was for conchology. He was not satisfied simply to form a collection, but was interested in all aspects of the biology of molluscs. On 2 April 1840 he became a Fellow of the Royal Society. On 21 June that year he married Ann Nevill at Llangennech. They had a son and four daughters; and were the grandparents of the physicist, Henry Gwyn Jeffreys Moseley. In 1866 Jeffreys ret ... Accessed through: World Register of Marine Species aon 2012-09-01 Description The height of the shell attains 1.5 mm, its diameter 2 mm. The shell consists of about three convex Whorl (mollusc), whorls forming a comparatively low, somewhat depressed spire. The entire surface below the relatively large, little raised, smooth nuclear whorl, is covered with raised, rounded, well-separated, revolving microscopic threads, most distinct on the base. The small umbilicus is scarcely more than a chink. The aperture and the operculum are typical. Distribution This species occurs in the Atlantic Ocean off New England, USA, found off Martha's Vineyard Martha's Vineyard, often simply called the Vineyard, is an island in the Northeastern United States, located south of Cape Cod in Dukes County, Massachusetts, known for ... Accessed through: World Register of Marine Species at http://www.marinespecies.org/aphia.php?p=taxdetails&id=532885 on 26 March 2013 Description The shell grows to a height of 2.5 mm. The shell has a delicate yellow color with coarse and very conspicuous granulation of the surface. When seen in profile, they appear like little spines. It has about three well-rounded, rather loosely coiled whorls, forming an elevated spire with relatively large, prominent nuclear whorl and a very large body whorl The body whorl is part of the morphology of the shell in those gastropod mollusks that possess a coiled shell. The term is also sometimes used in a similar way to describe the shell of a cephalopod mollusk. In gastropods In gastropods, the b .... The well-marked suture is rather deep. The deep umbilicus ... Accessed through: World Register of Marine Species at http://www.marinespecies.org/aphia.php?p=taxdetails&id=532981 on 2012-09-01 Description The height of the shell attains 1.6 mm, its diameter 2.2 mm. The white shell is smooth, semi-opaque, of firm texture, with brilliant luster so that it appears somewhat porcellanous. The three whorls are convex, with a single, delicate, raised, microscopic, spiral line just below the distinct suture, defining a narrow, inconspicuous, slightly concave or channeled, sutural area. The nucleus is relatively small, and a little raised. The body whorl is large. The spire is low. The form of the aperture and the peritreme and the channeled umbilical chink, bordered by an inconspicuous, rounded thread, place this species with Lissospira, although the texture of the shell is f ... Skenea Proxima
''Skenea proxima'' is a species of sea snail, a marine gastropod mollusk in the family Skeneidae.Rosenberg, G. (2012). ''Skenea proxima'' (Tryon, 1888). Accessed through: World Register of Marine Species at http://www.marinespecies.org/aphia.php?p=taxdetails&id=532304 on 2012-09-01 The name ''Cyclostrema proxima'' was introduced by G.W. Tryon as a replacement name for ''Cyclostrema affine'' Verrill, 1884 (now recognized as a synonym of ''Skenea basistriata'' (Jeffreys, 1877)), while he thought it was closely related to ''Cyclostrema basistriata'' Brugnone. Anders Warén thought it would probably prove a synonym of '' Skenea diaphana''. W.H. Dall thought it a synonym of ''Skenea trochoides''. Description The size of the shell attains 2.2 mm. The shell is narrowly umbilicated, faintly striate, with a few indistinct spiral lines below the suture, and numerous well defined ones on the base. This species agrees in form and condition of the umbilical region with the ''Lissospira dalli''. But it is very peculiarly marked on the base by thin, impressed lines, running obliquely and crossing the concentric spiral lines at a large angle, so as to produce a sort of "herring-bone" pattern as shown in the figure. Granigyra Limata
''Granigyra limata'' is a species of sea snail, a marine gastropod mollusk, unassigned in the superfamily Seguenzioidea. Description (Original description by W.H. Dall) The size of the shell varies between 2 mm and 2.5 mm. The small, white shell has almost exactly the shape of '' Trochus fulgidus'' Jeffreys, but a little smaller, with three extremely rounded whorls covered with small close-set irregular granulations of nearly uniform size like sand grains. The base of the shell has a small perforate umbilicus, into which the whorl rounds without carina, callus, or break of any kind. The circular aperture has thin, sharp, uniform, not reflected margins. This singular little shell has the typical characteristics of a ''Cyclostrema'' in its conchological features, except for its granular surface.
