Gallery 37
Gallery 37 is a not-for-profit organization in Chicago. Its purpose is to attract artistically inclined city youth to work as apprentice artists at a vacant downtown lot known as Block 37. Details Gallery 37 was created in 1991 by Chicago's Department of Cultural Affairs' Lois Weisberg and Maggie Daley, wife of the city's former mayor, Richard M. Daley. Block 37
108 North State Street, also known as Block 37, is a development located in the Loop community area of downtown Chicago, Illinois. It is located on the square block bounded clockwise from the North by West Randolph Street, North State Street, West Washington Street and North Dearborn Street that is known as "Block 37", which was its designated number as one of the original 58 blocks of the city. Above-ground redevelopment is complete, but work stopped on an underground public transit station when the station were only partially complete. The previous buildings on the block were demolished in 1989 for a hotly contested redevelopment plan under the then new Chicago Mayor Richard M. Daley. The debates included the demolition of the Chicago Landmark McCarthy Building, which proceeded after the Illinois Supreme Court decided private preservation groups did not have standing to challenge the city's decision. Lois Weisberg
Lois Weisberg (May 6, 1925 – January 13, 2016) was the first Commissioner of Cultural Affairs for the City of Chicago, from 1989 until January 2011. She was profiled by writer Malcolm Gladwell in a 1999 ''New Yorker'' essay, "Six Degrees of Lois Weisberg"; Gladwell, who called Weisberg a "connector" and included the essay about her in his book '' The Tipping Point'', asked: "She's a grandmother, she lives in a big house in Chicago, and you've never heard of her. Does she run the world?" Weisberg was appointed by Mayor Harold Washington to head the city's Office of Event Planning (in the Department of Cultural Affairs) in 1983. After School Matters
After School Matters is a non-profit organization that provides Chicago high school teens with after-school and summer opportunities. It offers project-based after-school and summer programs in the arts, communications and leadership, sports and STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Math). History and background After School Matters was originally founded by the former first lady of the City of Chicago, Maggie Daley, during her husband Richard M. Daley's term as mayor. Gallery 37 was the predecessor to the organization, which offered after school programs focusing primarily on the arts. In 2000, After School Matters was formed and began offering Chicago teenagers a wider range of programs, including programs from Gallery 37. When the youth organization first launched as Gallery 37, 260 kids were enrolled that summer. Over 200,000 teenagers have been associated with or members of After School Matters since its launch.
