Gaillac
Gaillac (; ) is a commune in the Tarn department in southern France. It had in 2013 a population of 14,334 inhabitants. Its inhabitants are called Gaillacois. Geography Gaillac is a town situated between Toulouse, Albi and Montauban. It has gained much recognition due to the wines that bear the town's name. The river Tarn runs along the border of the town by the south, east and west. It lies 50 km north-east of Toulouse. It is a market town and is the commercial centre of the north-west of Tarn. The local wine of Gaillac, first made almost two thousand years ago, is of two official appellations (AOC). The terroir is made up of clay, limestone, sand and silex soils. Gaillac receives more sunshine than Bordeaux and is graced by a cool maritime climate. Union Athlétique Gaillac is a French rugby union club currently competing in the Fédérale 3 league, the third level of the French amateur league system, after having been forcibly relegated from the Rugby Pro D2, second level of the Ligue Nationale de Rugby, French professional league due to serious financial problems. Gaillac AOC () is an ''Appellation d'Origine Contrôlée'' (AOC) in South West France in the département of Tarn, just north of Toulouse. History The region makes claims to be among the earliest viticultural centres of ancient Gaul, though possibly after those of Languedoc around Narbonne, with wine production established in early 1st century.winepros.com.au. Roman merchants transported wine to Bordeaux and Northern Europe down the Tarn, and vineyards soon followed in the valley. Archaeologists have found Roman pottery in Montans. Henri Yrissou
Henri Yrissou (May 15, 1909 - June 21, 2009) was a French World War II veteran and politician. He served as a member of the National Assembly and as the mayor of Gaillac. Early life Henri Yrissou was born in Nîmes, France on May 15, 1909. During World War II, he joined the French Resistance and consequently received the Resistance Medal; he also received the Croix de Guerre and became a Commander of the Legion of Honour. Additionally, he became a Commander of the Veterans of Foreign Wars. Career Yrissou was Public Works and Foreign Affairs Minister Antoine Pinay's chief of staff from 1950 to 1955. He then served as a member of the National Assembly from November 30, 1958 to October 9, 1962, representing Tarn. Castelnau-de-Montmiral
Castelnau-de-Montmiral (; ) is a commune in the Tarn department in southern France. Demography Geography The Vère flows westward through the commune. History While traces of activities dating back to the Bronze Age such as dolmens and oppidums can be seen in the nearby forest La Grésigne, the village was founded as an albigensian bastide (fortified new town) in 1222 by Raymond VII, count of Toulouse, under the name “Castellum Novum Montis Mirabilis”. During the subsequent years, the village remained an impressive stronghold. Duras is a traditional French variety of red wine grape that is mostly grown around the river Tarn, northeast of Toulouse. It is usually blended with other traditional varieties, but production has been declining in recent years. Despite the name the grape appears to have no connection with the Côtes de Duras east of Bordeaux, and is not grown there today.J. Fernande Decruck
Fernande Decruck (née Breilh) (25 December 18966 August 1954) was a French composer who composed over 40 works for the saxophone. Most well-known is her Sonata in C sharp minor for alto saxophone or viola, dedicated to Marcel Mule. Life Fernande Breilh was born in the village of Gaillac in France to a local merchant. She began learning piano aged eight and studied at the Conservatoire de Toulouse. She was admitted to the Conservatoire de Paris in 1918 studying organ and composition. There she won prizes in harmony, fugue, counterpoint, and piano accompaniment. Her studies in improvisation on organ led her to travel to America where she gave her first organ recitals in New York. Her husband, Maurice Decruck, a clarinetist, saxophonist and double-bassist, played both bass and saxophone with the New York Philharmonic. Maurice Decruck later became a music publisher, opening the company Les Editions de Paris. They married in 1924 and had three children, Jeannine Decruck (born 1925) ...
