Career Ahmed was elected to Parliament from Gaibandha-1 in March 2017 in a by-election as a Bangladesh Awami League candidate. The by-elections were called after the incumbent Manjurul Islam Liton was assassinated. Death Ahmed was injured on 18 November 2017 in a road accident in Delduar Upazila, Tangail. Abdul Kader Khan
Abdul Kader Khan (born 31 March 1952) is a Jatiya Party politician and a former Jatiya Sangsad member representing the Gaibandha-1 constituency. In June 2019, Khan was sentenced to life imprisonment for possessing a firearm and an additional 15 years for possessing ammunition. Career Khan is a retired medical officer of Bangladesh Army with the rank of colonel. He was elected to parliament from Jatiya Party of the Grand Alliance in 2008 representing Gaibandha-1. Manjurul Islam Liton (c. 1968 – 31 December 2016) was a Bangladesh Awami League politician and a member of parliament from the Gaibandha-1 constituency. Early life and career Liton was a marine engineer by training. He was a director of Ashraf Ali Cold Storage Limited and proprietor of Islam Ship Builders & Heavy Engineering. Arrest On 15 October 2015, Liton was arrested from Dhaka's Uttara area, after the Supreme Court cleared the way for his arrest in two cases filed for shooting a 10-year-old boy and vandalizing a house in Gaibandha. Witnesses allege that on October 2, Liton shot 10 year old shot Sourav Mia in both legs when he was taking a morning walk with his uncle at Gopalcharan village in Gaibandha. Gaibandha District
Gaibandha ( bn, গাইবান্ধা জেলা, ''Gaibandha Jela'' or ''Gaibandha Zila'') is a district in Northern Bangladesh. It is a part of the Rangpur Division. Gaibandha subdivision was established in 1875. Gaibandha was previously known as Bhabanigonj. The name was changed from Bhabanigonj to Gaibandha in 1875. Gaibandha was established as a district on 15 February 1984. Gaibandha is the administrative headquarter and largest urban centre of this district. Etymology There are two opinions about the name of Gaibandha. The most famous opinion is: around five thousand years ago, capital of Matsya Kingdom of King Birat was in Gobindaganj area. Bengali: মৎস্য (Matsya) means fish and Bengali: দেশ (desh) means country. The Jatiya Sangsad ( bn, জাতীয় সংসদ, lit=National Parliament, translit=Jatiyô Sôngsôd), often referred to simply as the ''Sangsad'' or JS and also known as the House of the Nation, is the supreme legislative body of Bangladesh. The current parliament of Bangladesh contains 350 seats, including 50 seats reserved exclusively for women. Elected occupants are called Member of Parliament, or MP. The 11th National Parliamentary Election was held on 30 December 2018. Elections to the body are held every five years, unless a parliament is dissolved earlier by the President of Bangladesh. 1991 Bangladeshi General Election
General elections were held in Bangladesh on 27 February 1991. The Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) emerged as the largest party in parliament, winning 140 of the 300 directly-elected seats. The BNP formed a government with the support of the Islamic party Jamaat-e-Islami, and on 20 March Khaleda Zia was sworn in for her first term as Prime Minister. The elections were described to be free and fair by many international observers, and it played a major role in solidifying Bangladeshi democracy in aftermath of the anti-government protests in late 1980s. Voter turnout was 55.4%.
