Christopher Gadsden
Christopher Gadsden (February 16, 1724 – August 28, 1805) was an American politician who was the principal leader of the South Carolina Patriot movement during the American Revolution. He was a delegate to the Continental Congress, a brigadier general in the Continental Army during the American Revolutionary War, Lieutenant Governor of South Carolina, a merchant, and the designer of the Gadsden flag. He is a signatory to the Continental Association. Early life Gadsden was born in 1724 in Charleston, South Carolina. He was the son of Thomas Gadsden, who had been in the Royal Navy before becoming customs collector for the Port of Charleston. His grandfather, Edward Gadsden, was born in Wiltshire, England, in 1672 and emigrated to South Carolina in 1695. He was sent to school near Bristol, England. Vivian Gadsden
Vivian Lynette Gadsden is an American psychologist who is an education researcher at the University of Pennsylvania. Her research considers the social and cultural factors that affect learning and literacy. She is interested in intergenerational learning within African-American families. Early life and education Gadsden was an undergraduate student at Fisk University in Nashville, Tennessee. She moved to the University of Michigan for graduate studies, where she completed a doctorate of education in adult literacy. Gadsden worked as a Spencer Foundation postdoctoral fellow. Research and career Gadsden started her academic career studying educational psychology at Wayne State University. She moved to Washington, D.C. where she was made a research analyst in policy studies. Battery Gadsden
Battery Gadsden is a historic artillery battery located at Sullivan's Island, Charleston County, South Carolina. It was built in 1903–1904, and is one of a series of batteries stretching from Fort Moultrie to the eastern end of Sullivan's Island. It was named after Christopher Gadsden. Until decommissioned in 1917, the concrete battery housed four, six inch guns. It measures approximately 377 feet long and 84 feet wide, with the front or ocean side of the battery at approximately 7 feet high. Battery Gadsden and its neighbor Battery Thomson provided fortification at the mouth of Charleston Harbor. The battery now houses the Edgar Allan Poe Branch of the Charleston County Public Library. The Gadsden Mall is a regional shopping mall on U.S. Route 411 (Rainbow Drive) in Gadsden, Alabama. Located at the interchange of Interstate 759 and U.S. Route 411, it is in the southern section of the city. It is anchored by Belk, Martin's Family Clothing and Food City. Gadsden Hotel
The Gadsden Hotel is a historic hotel in Douglas, Arizona. It was listed on the U.S. National Register of Historic Places in 1976. The hotel is owned by Bright Brains Hospitality History The hotel opened in 1907. Named for the Gadsden Purchase, the stately five-story, 160-room hotel became a home away from home for cattlemen, ranchers, miners, and businessmen. The hotel was leveled by fire and rebuilt in 1929 by architect from El Paso Henry Trost. The Gadsden's spacious main lobby is majestically set with a solid white Italian marble staircase and four soaring marble columns. A stained glass window mural of the Southwest Desert by 5th generation artisan Ralph Baker, who studied under Louis Comfort Tiffany, extends forty-two feet across one wall of the massive mezzanine. Gadsden Green Homes is a housing complex located in the Westside neighborhood in Charleston, South Carolina. The name comes from the neighborhood which had been owned by Christopher Gadsden. The housing project was built in two stages: the eastern half (bounded by Line St. to the north, President St. to the east, Bogard and Allway Sts. to the south, and Flood St. to the west) was constructed in 1942 while the western half (bounded by Line St. to the north, Flood St. to the east, Allway St. to the south, and Hagood Ave. to the west) was finished in 1968. Gadsden Coca-Cola Bottling Plant
The Gadsden Coca-Cola Bottling Plant is a historic building in Gadsden, Alabama, United States. It was built in 1929 by the Coca-Cola Company to replace a facility that had opened in 1915. In 1948–49, a two-story rear addition and one-story wing were built. The plant remained in use until 1987, when a new plant was built in the eastern part of town. The brick building is two stories, with a tile hipped roof and bracketed eaves. The original entrance features a stone surround with a keystone, but the door has since been replaced with a single-pane window. A similar entrance between the original block and the 1940s single-story addition which has scoring to imitate blocks and a Coca-Cola bottle carved into the lintel.
