Gabriel Curran
Gabriel Curran (died 2008) was an Irish flat racing jockey. Curran rode the winners of two Irish Classic Races during his career as well as the English 2,000 Guineas on Nebbiolo in 1977. He rode for trainer Kevin Prendergast and after retiring as a jockey worked as an assistant trainer to Charlie Swan and ran a stud farm. Curran was born in Kells, County Meath and died suddenly in 2008. Irish 2,000 Guineas
The Irish 2,000 Guineas is a Group 1 flat horse race in Ireland open to three-year-old thoroughbred colts and fillies. It is run at the Curragh over a distance of 1 mile (1,609 metres), and it is scheduled to take place each year in May. History The event was established in 1921, a year before the launch of the Irish 1,000 Guineas. The inaugural running was won by Soldennis. It is Ireland's equivalent of the 2,000 Guineas, and in recent years it has taken place three weeks after that race. The field usually includes horses which previously contested the English version, and nine have achieved victory in both events. The first was Right Tack in 1969, and the most recent was Churchill in 2017. The leading horses from the Irish 2,000 Guineas often go on to compete in the following month's St. James's Palace Stakes. Sweet Emma
Sweet Emma (19 March 1980 – after 1998) was an Irish Thoroughbred racehorse and broodmare. As a two-year-old in 1982 she won two minor races in spring and then recorded her most important success with a victory in the Group 1 Phoenix Stakes. She went on to finish fourth in the Moyglare Stud Stakes and ended the year as the best Irish-trained juvenile filly of her generation. After being transferred to race in England she failed to win at three but did finish third in the Leisure Stakes and fourth in the Coronation Stakes. After her retirement from racing she had some success as a broodmare in Europe and Japan. Background Sweet Emma was a "lengthy, attractive" bay mare with no white markings bred in Ireland by the Hesmonds Stud. As a yearling she was sold for 8,200 guineas and was sent into training with Michael Connolly. Phoenix Stakes
The Phoenix Stakes is a Group 1 flat horse race in Ireland open to two-year-old thoroughbred colts and fillies. It is run at the Curragh over a distance of 6 furlongs (1,207 metres), and it is scheduled to take place each year in August. History The event was established in 1902, and it was originally held at Phoenix Park. It used to be called the Phoenix Plate, and was informally known as "the 1500". It was initially contested over 5 furlongs. The race was renamed the Phoenix Stakes in 1956. It was given Group 2 status in 1971, and promoted to Group 1 level in 1979. Northern Treasure
Northern Treasure (foaled 18 February 1973) was an Irish Thoroughbred racehorse and sire. As a two-year-old in 1975 he won twice, finished second six times and third once from nine races, showing consistent form but appearing to be some way short of top class. In the following spring he was beaten in his first four races before recording an upset win in the Irish 2000 Guineas. He continued his improvement when moved up in distance, winning the Blandford Stakes and finishing third in both the Irish Derby and the Champion Stakes. After his retirement from racing he was exported to stand as a breeding stallion in Australia. Background Northern Treasure was a chestnut horse with a white star bred in Ireland by Tim Rogers and C. Arctique Royale (22 April 1978 – 2000) was an Irish Thoroughbred racehorse and broodmare. As a two-year-old she made only two appearances, winning a maiden race at the Curragh on her debut and then taking the Moyglare Stud Stakes at the same track. She was beaten on her first run of 1982 but then recorded her biggest win in the Irish 1000 Guineas. She was beaten in her last four races and was retired from racing at the end of the year. She had considerable success as a broodmare. Background Arctique Royale was a "lightly-made" bay mare with no white markings bred in Ireland by her owner Paddy Prendergast. Kells (; ) is a town in County Meath, Ireland. The town lies off the M3 motorway, from Navan and from Dublin.
