Gabriel Araújo (swimmer)
Gabriel Geraldo dos Santos Araújo (born 16 March 2002), also known by his nickname Gabrielzinho, is a Brazilian paralympic swimmer. Araújo has phocomelia, which resulted in him having atrophied legs and no arms. He swims by Undulatory locomotion, undulating like a dolphin, and has earned the nickname "rocketman" for his speed. He began competing at 13 years old, and entered into the 2020 Summer Paralympics at 19, where he won two gold medals and one silver medal. In the 2024 Summer Paralympics he broke the world record for S2 (classification), SM2 classification twice in one day and went on to win three gold medals that year. S2 (classification)
S2, SB1, SM2 are para-swimming classifications used for categorizing swimmers based on their level of disability. People in this class have limited use of their arms, and no or extremely limited use of their hands, legs and trunk. Swimmers in this class have a variety of different disabilities including cerebral palsy and amputations. Swimmers in this class have a number of events they can participate in including the 50m and 100m Freestyle, 200m Freestyle, 50m Backstroke, 50m Butterfly, 50m Breaststroke and 150m Individual Medley events. Undulatory Locomotion
Undulatory locomotion is the type of motion characterized by wave-like movement patterns that act to propel an animal forward. Examples of this type of gait include crawling in snakes, or swimming in the lamprey. Although this is typically the type of gait utilized by limbless animals, some creatures with limbs, such as the salamander, forgo use of their legs in certain environments and exhibit undulatory locomotion. In robotics this movement strategy is studied in order to create novel robotic devices capable of traversing a variety of environments. Environmental interactions In limbless locomotion, forward locomotion is generated by propagating flexural waves along the length of the animal's body. Phocomelia
Phocomelia is a congenital condition that involves malformations of human arms and legs which result in a flipper-like appendage. A prominent cause of phocomelia is the mother being prescribed the use of the drug thalidomide during pregnancy; however, the causes of most cases are to be determined. Occurrence in an individual results in various abnormalities to the face, limbs, ears, nose, vessels and many other underdevelopments. Although operations may improve some abnormalities, many are not surgically treatable due to the lack of nerves and other related structures. The term is from Ancient Greek φώκη ''phōkē'', " seal (animal)" + ''-o-'' interfix + μέλος ''melos'', "limb" + ια ''-ia'' suffix). 2023 Parapan American Games
The 2023 Parapan American Games, officially the VII Pan American Games and commonly known as the Santiago 2023 Parapan-Am Games, were an international multi-sport event for athletes with disabilities. It celebrated the tradition of the Parapan American Games as governed by the Americas Paralympic Committee and was held from 17 to 26 November 2023 in Santiago, Chile. Bidding process Two bids were submitted for the 2023 Pan American Games. Santiago, Chile and Buenos Aires, Argentina both submitted bids. On February 1, 2017, the Pan American Sports Organization (now Panam Sports) announced the two cities as the official bids.
