GP Dr. Eugeen Roggeman
The GP Burgemeester Dokter Eugeen Roggeman is a Belgian cycling race organized for the first time in 1929. The race is named after doctor Eugeen Roggeman (1883–1965), who was mayor of Stekene for more than 38 years (from 1927 to 1965). With Stekene as both start and finish place, the course variates between 156 and 170 km. The competition's roll of honor includes the successes of Romain Maes, Stan Ockers, Rik Van Looy and Jan Janssen. Stekene
Stekene () is a municipality located in the Belgian province of East Flanders. Since 1976, the municipality has comprised the towns of Kemzeke, Klein-Sinaai and Stekene proper. It also includes the village Koewacht. In 2021, Stekene had a total population of 18,863. The total area is 44.80 km2. Stekene profiles itself as an oasis of green within industrialized Flanders as a large part of its area consists of forests and agricultural lands. The E34 road, from Antwerp to the coast, passes through the municipality and also has its own access to it. Another part of the community is the N403, which connects to Sint-Niklaas. Geography The municipality of Stekene is located in the region of Waasland, on the border with the Netherlands, 10 km north-west of Sint-Niklaas and 20 km west of Antwerp. Sylvère Maes (; 27 August 1909 – 5 December 1966) was a Belgium, Belgian cyclist, who is most famous for winning the Tour de France in 1936 Tour de France, 1936 and 1939 Tour de France, 1939. In 1937, Maes left the 1937 Tour de France together with his Belgian team while he was leading the general classification, in response to actions from French spectators and decisions from the jury. Biography Born in 1909 as the youngest in a family of ten children, Maes rode his first cycling race in 1928, and immediately was one of the best young riders. At the end of the 1932 season, Maes became a professional cyclist, and in a short time managed to win two races for professionals. The Odiel () is a river in the Atlantic basin in southern Spain, more precisely in the province of Huelva, Andalusia. Gustaaf Deloor (24 June 1913 – 28 January 2002) was a Belgium, Belgian Bicycle road racing, road racing cyclist and the winner of the first two editions of the Vuelta a España in 1935 and 1936. The 1936 edition remains the slowest winning finish time of the Vuelta in 150:07:54, the race consisted of 22 stages with a total length of 4,407 km. Alfons Deloor
Alfons Deloor (his name is also given as "De Loor") (3 June 1910 - 23 March 1995) was a Belgian racing cyclist. He reached second place at the 1936 Vuelta a España behind his brother Gustaaf, and won the 1938 Liège–Bastogne–Liège. Biography Alfons Deloor was the fourth of five sons. Their father worked as a farmhand during the season, and in the coal mines of Hainaut otherwise. The family lived in De Klinge, a small Flemish town near the border with the Netherlands. Alfons and his younger brother Gustaaf were taught to ride a bike by their elder brother Edward. His first cycling success came in 1931, finishing ninth in Liège–Bastogne–Liège. He went on to finish second in the 1932 Tour of Flanders. The same year, he was tenth in Paris–Roubaix, which he improved upon in the 1933 edition by finishing sixth.
