GO-1
GO-1 is a submarine communications cable system that links Sicily to Malta, operated by the Maltese telecommunications company GO. It currently consists of a single cable, laid in 1995, linking St George's Bay in Malta to Catania in Sicily. The laying of the second leg of the system, linking St Paul's Bay in Malta to Mazara del Vallo in Sicily, started in December 2008; it is expected to be operational in early 2009. As of December 2019, a third leg of the system was planned to connect with Marseille, France There were reports of cable failure on the St. George's Bay/Catania cable in December 2008, concurrent with the failure of several other cable systems at around the same time. It has been speculated that these multiple failures of apparently unrelated submarine cable systems may have been related to seismic activity in the region. 2008 Submarine Cable Disruption
The 2008 submarine cable disruption refers to three separate incidents of major damage to submarine optical communication cables around the world. The first incident caused damage involving up to five high-speed Internet submarine communications cables in the Mediterranean Sea and Middle East from 23 January to 4 February 2008, causing internet disruptions and slowdowns for users in the Middle East and India. The incident called into doubt the safety of the undersea portion of the Internet cable system. In late February there was another outage, this time affecting a fiber optic connection between Singapore and Jakarta. On 19 December, FLAG FEA, GO-1, SEA-ME-WE 3, and SEA-ME-WE 4 were all cut. A submarine communications cable is a cable laid on the sea bed between land-based stations to carry telecommunication signals across stretches of ocean and sea. The first submarine communications cables laid beginning in the 1850s carried telegraphy traffic, establishing the first instant telecommunications links between continents, such as the first transatlantic telegraph cable which became operational on 16 August 1858. Subsequent generations of cables carried telephone traffic, then data communications traffic. Mazara Del Vallo
Mazara del Vallo (; ) is a town and ''comune'' in the province of Trapani, southwestern Sicily, Italy. It lies mainly on the left bank at the mouth of the Mazaro river. It is an agricultural and fishing centre and its port gives shelter to the largest fishing fleet in Italy. Recently it has been a hotspot for migrants from North Africa. History Etymology and origins Mazara was founded by the Phoenicians in the 9th century BC with the name of ''Mazar'' who made it an important mercantile emporium. The discovery of Phoenician vases demonstrate the existence of a Phoenician port built between the 6th and 5th centuries BC.
