GLSEN
GLSEN (pronounced ''glisten''; formerly the Gay, Lesbian & Straight Education Network) is an American education organization working to end discrimination, harassment, and bullying based on sexual orientation, gender identity and gender expression and to prompt LGBT cultural inclusion and awareness in K-12 schools. Founded in 1990 in Boston, Massachusetts, the organization is now headquartered in New York City and has an office of public policy based in Washington, D.C. there are 39 GLSEN chapters across 26 states that train 5,000 students, educators, and school personnel each year. The chapters also support more than 4,000 registered school-based clubs—commonly known as gay–straight alliances (GSAs)--which work to address name-calling, bullying, and harassment in their schools. Day Of Silence
Day of Silence is an annual day of action organized by GLSEN (Gay, Lesbian & Straight Education Network) to spread awareness about the effects of the bullying and harassment of lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, queer, and questioning (LGBTQ) students. In the United States, students take a day-long vow of silence to symbolically represent the silencing of LGBTQ students. The Day of Silence has been held each year in April since 1996. Since 2011, the event has been held on the second Friday of April, except in 2018, when it was observed on Friday, April 27, 2020, when it was observed on Friday, April 24, 2021, when it was observed on Friday, April 23, and 2022, when it was observed on Friday, April 22. Gay–straight Alliance
A gay–straight alliance, gender–sexuality alliance (GSA) or queer–straight alliance (QSA) is a student-led or community-based organization, found in middle schools, high schools, colleges, and universities. These are primarily in the United States and Canada. Gay–straight alliance is intended to provide a safe and supportive environment for lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, and all LGBTQ+ individuals, children, teenagers, and youth as well as their cisgender heterosexual allies. The first GSAs were established in the 1980s. Kevin Jennings
Kevin Brett Jennings (born May 8, 1963) is an American educator, author, and administrator. He was the assistant deputy secretary for the Office of Safe and Drug-Free Schools at the U.S. Department of Education from July 6, 2009 – June 2011. Jennings holds degrees from Harvard University, Columbia University's Teachers College, and the Stern School of Business at New York University. He became a teacher and was named one of fifty "Terrific Teachers Making a Difference" by the Edward Calesa Foundation; he also came out as gay to his students. In 1990, he founded the Gay and Lesbian Independent School Teachers Education Network (later changed to the Gay, Lesbian and Straight Education Network), which seeks to end discrimination, harassment, and bullying based on sexual orientation and gender identity. Eliza Byard
Eliza Byard was the executive director of GLSEN before stepping down on March 1, 2021. She also previously worked as a filmmaker. Life Eliza Byard was born in New York City on 8 March 1968. Her mother Rosalie is an English as a second language teacher at the Kaplan International Center, and her father Paul is an architect and director of historical preservation courses at Columbia University's School of Architecture, Planning and Preservation. When Eliza was thirteen, she worked as an intern at the New York City public television station WNET. Eliza Byard attended Yale University and later Columbia, where she received her master's and doctorate degrees in United States history. In 2004, Byard had a commitment ceremony with her partner, Eva Kolodner, a film producer. Ally Week
Ally Week is a national youth-led effort encouraging students to be allies with the LGBT (lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender) members of their community in standing against bullying and harassment. It takes place in K-12 schools and colleges. It is led in the same spirit as Day of Silence: to educate on anti-LGBT harassment issues. Ally Week is usually held in September or October. History Ally Week was created by Joe Montana and other youth members of the GLSEN National JumpStart Student Leadership Team in October 2005. The event has grown since. In 2008, the pledge cards were mistakenly used with kindergartners. LGBT History Month
LGBTQ History Month is an annual month-long observance of lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender and queer history, and the history of the gay rights and related civil rights movements. It was founded in 1994 by Missouri high-school history teacher Rodney Wilson. LGBTQ History Month provides role models, builds community, and represents a civil rights statement about the contributions of the LGBTQ community.
