The Georgia Department of Natural Resources (DNR) is an administrative agency of the U.S. state of Georgia. Structure The agency has statewide responsibilities for managing and conserving Georgia’s natural, cultural, and historical resources, and has five divisions: *Coastal Resources Division *Environmental Protection Division *Law Enforcement Division * Parks, Recreation & Historic Sites *Wildlife Resources Division The DNR is headed by a commissioner, currently Mark Williams. The department's Board of Natural Resources is composed of 18 citizens who oversee rulemaking for the agency. Members are appointed by the governor and approved by the state senate. The Historic Preservation Division was transferred from the DNR to the Department of Community Affairs in 2020. This is a list of state parks in Georgia. The park system of the US state of Georgia (U.S. state), Georgia was founded in 1931 with Indian Springs State Park and Vogel State Park. Indian Springs has been operated by the state as a public park since 1825, making it perhaps the oldest state park in the United States. The newest state park is Don Carter State Park. Since the Great Recession, Georgia has halved the budget for the Division of State Parks and Historic Sites and turned over the management of five of the parks to Coral Hospitality, a Florida-based hotel and resort management company. The Georgia State Senate and the lower house of the General Assembly, the Georgia House of Representatives, comprise the bicameral legislature of the state.
