Garo People
The Garo people are a Tibeto-Burman ethnic group who live mostly in the Northeast Indian state of Meghalaya, with a smaller number in neighbouring Bangladesh. They are the second-largest indigenous people in Meghalaya after the Khasi and comprise about a third of the local population. They are also found in the Mymensingh Division including Jamalpur, Sherpur, and Mymensingh districts of Bangladesh. Emma Garo (also known as Emma Garo Ma’aramo) is a lawyer and currently Chief Magistrate in the Solomon Islands. She was one of the first qualified women lawyers in the country. Garo worked as a senior defense legal officer for the Public Solicitors Office in the Solomon Islands before being appointed a principal magistrate in 2007.
