The Garo people are a Tibeto-Burman ethnic group who live mostly in the Northeast Indian state of Meghalaya, with a smaller number in neighbouring Bangladesh. They are the second-largest indigenous people in Meghalaya after the Khasi and comprise about a third of the local population. Emma Garo (also known as Emma Garo Ma’aramo) is a lawyer and currently Chief Magistrate in the Solomon Islands. She was one of the first qualified women lawyers in the country.
