Gosport and Fareham Inshore Rescue Service (GAFIRS) is a volunteer-operated Independent lifeboats (British Isles), independent Lifeboat (rescue), lifeboat charity based in Gosport, Hampshire, England.OS Explorer Map – 119 - Meon Valley, Portsmouth, Gosport and Fareham, Showing part of the South Downs Way (Folded Map). Independent Lifeboats (British Isles)
Independent lifeboats in Britain and Ireland began to be established around British Isles, the coasts towards the end of the 18th century in response to the loss of life at sea. More recently, independent services have been set up in response to the increasing popularity of coastal and river sport and leisure activities. Many currently-independent, RNLI-adopted and lapsed services pre-date the RNLI, founded in 1824 as the ''Royal National Institution for the Preservation of Life from Shipwreck'' (RNIPLS). There are at least 84 (see tables below) and as many as 100 independent lifeboat services operating throughout United Kingdom, Britain, Republic of Ireland, Ireland, as well as the Channel Islands, both on coasts and inland waterways, comprising around a quarter of the lifeboat services in the UK and Ireland. Dee Caffari
Denise "Dee" Caffari MBE (born 23 January 1973) is a British sailor, and in 2006 became the first woman to sail single-handedly and non-stop around the world "the wrong way"; westward against the prevailing winds and currents. In February 2009, Caffari completed the Vendée Globe race and set a new record to become the first woman to sail solo, non-stop, around the world in both directions. Early life Descended from a Maltese sea captain, Caffari grew up in Rickmansworth, Hertfordshire and attended St. Clement Danes School. Caffari studied at Leeds Metropolitan University and became a PE teacher for 5 years before beginning her sailing career. Caffari trained at UKSA (based in Cowes, Isle of Wight) completing her Yachtmaster course and a range of ocean qualifications.
