Euphrates
The Euphrates ( ; see #Etymology, below) is the longest and one of the most historically important rivers of West Asia. Tigris–Euphrates river system, Together with the Tigris, it is one of the two defining rivers of Mesopotamia (). Originating in Turkey, the Euphrates flows through Syria and Iraq to join the Tigris in the Shatt al-Arab in Iraq, which empties into the Persian Gulf. Mun'im Furat
Mun'im Furat (1900-1972) (occasionally given as Monem Furat) was an Iraqi primitive artist, noted for his sculptures resembling Sumerian statuary. His style was very distinctive and he was the only Iraqi artist to produce works in the naive style. Life and career Mun'im Furat was born in Baghdad in 1900 into the Al Jubur tribe. He left school at a very young age, but managed to learn how to read and write and was able to recite the Quran. His real name was Na'im Barbout Wadi, but he chose the alias Mun'im Furat. As a young man, he worked as a shepherd, butcher and labourer in order to support his family. By chance, he visited the Iraq Museum and after seeing Art of Mesopotamia, Sumerian sculptures, he decided to become a sculptor. He frequented the Iraqi Museum where he copied selected works to make sculptures which he could sell to dealers and shops for the tourist trade. Al-Furat University
Al-Furat University () is a Syrian public university founded in 2006. It is located mainly in Deir ez-Zor, which hosts the medical school, and has campuses in other cities in Syria. Before 2011 it was the smallest public university in Syria. The university runs its own open access journal. The responsible authority for the campus in Deir ez-Zor is the Ministry of Higher Education (Syria). Before 2011 the university taught undergraduate and post-graduated medicine to an internationally recognised standard. In 2014 Islamic State imposed behavioural conditions on the staff and students of the university's Raqqa campus to remain open. In January 2015 they forced the campus to close. As of 2021, its Raqqa campus is now the site of al-Sharq University opened by the Autonomous Administration of North and East Syria. Deir Ez-Zor
Deir ez-Zor () is the largest city in eastern Syria and the seventh largest in the country. Located on the banks of the Euphrates to the northeast of the capital Damascus, Deir ez-Zor is the capital of the Deir ez-Zor Governorate. In the 2018 census, it had a population of 271,800. Tabqa Dam
The Tabqa Dam (, ; ), or al-Thawra Dam as it is also named (, ; , literally "Revolution Dam"), most commonly known as Euphrates Dam (; ; ), is an earthen dam on the Euphrates, located upstream from the city of Raqqa in Raqqa Governorate, Syria. The city of Al-Thawrah is located immediately south of the dam. The dam is high and long and is the largest dam in Syria. Its construction led to the creation of Lake Assad, Syria's largest water reservoir. The dam was constructed between 1968 and 1973 with help from the Soviet Union. At the same time, an international effort was made to excavate and document as many archaeological remains as possible in the area of the future lake before they would be flooded by the rising water.
