Fulvio Melia
Fulvio Melia (born 2 August 1956) is an Italy, Italian-Americans, American astrophysicist, cosmologist and author. He is professor of physics, astronomy and the applied math program at the University of Arizona and was a scientific editor of ''The Astrophysical Journal'' and an associate editor of ''The Astrophysical Journal Letters''. A former Presidential Young Investigator and Alfred P. Sloan Foundation, Sloan Research Fellow, he is the author of six English books (and various foreign translations) and 230 refereed articles on astrophysics, theoretical astrophysics and cosmology. Career Melia was born in Gorizia, Friuli-Venezia Giulia, Italy. Gorizia
Gorizia (; ; , ; ; ) is a town and (municipality) in northeastern Italy, in the autonomous region of Friuli-Venezia Giulia. It is located at the foot of the Julian Alps, bordering Slovenia. It is the capital of the Province of Gorizia, Regional decentralization entity of Gorizia and is a local center of tourism, industry, and commerce. Since 1947, a Twin cities (geographical proximity), twin town of Nova Gorica has developed on the other side of the modern-day Italy–Slovenia border. Purple Mountain Observatory
The Purple Mountain Observatory (), also known as Zijinshan Astronomical Observatory, is an astronomical observatory located on the Purple Mountain in the east of Nanjing. The observatory is responsible for calculating the official Chinese calendar of mainland China. Description The Purple Mountain Observatory was established in 1934 funded by the Nationalist Government of the Republic of China and administered by Academia Sinica. The longtime director of the observatory from 1950 to 1984 was Chinese astronomer Zhang Yuzhe (, 1902–1986, also known as Y. C. Chang). By the late 1980s, increasing light pollution in Nanjing meant Purple Mountain was no longer viable as a working observatory. Presidential Young Investigator Award
The Presidential Young Investigator Award (PYI) was awarded by the National Science Foundation of the United States Federal Government. The program operated from 1984 to 1991, and was replaced by the NSF Young Investigator (NYI) Awards and Presidential Faculty Fellows (PFF) program. In 1995, the NSF Young Investigator program was subsumed into the NSF CAREER Awards program, and in 1996, the Presidential Faculty Fellows program was replaced by the PECASE program. Applicants could not directly apply for the award, but were nominated by others including their own institutions based on their previous record of scientific achievement.
