Fuelling Poverty
''Fuelling Poverty'' is a 2012 Nigerian documentary by Ishaya Bako that narrates the activities of the Occupy Nigeria movement when it was at its climax in early 2012. The 28 minutes video also features special appearances from Nobel Laureate Wole Soyinka, Femi Falana, Nasir Ahmad el-Rufai, Seun Kuti and Desmond Elliot. It won the ''Best Documentary'' award at the 9th Africa Movie Academy Awards. Censorship The Nigerian government through the National Film and Video Censors Board (NFVCB) banned the video from public exhibition stating that "...the contents of the film are highly provocative and likely to incite or encourage public disorder and undermine national security." The Producers of the documentary through NFVCB Lawyer were also "...strongly advised not to distribute or exhibit the documentary film. All relevant national security agencies are on the alert...". Ishaya Bako
Ishaya Bako (born 30 December 1986) is a Nigerian film director and screenwriter. Early life He was born in Kaduna, where he lived all his life and later moved to London, where he studied at the London Film School. Career After attending the London Film School, Bako went on to script and direct the Africa Movie Academy Awards (AMAA)-winning ''Braids on a Bald Head''. He won the Best Short Film Awards at the 8th Africa Movie Academy Awards. He is an emerging voice of his generation and a member of a select few Global Shapers, a collection of enterprising youths initiated by the World Economic Forum. 9th Africa Movie Academy Awards
The 9th Africa Movie Academy Awards ceremony honouring movies of 2012 was held in Yenagoa, Bayelsa State on 20 April 2013. The event was hosted by actress and former AMAA winner Ama K. Abebrese and Ayo Makun with many celebrities in attendance. The awards' nomination party was held in Lilongwe, Malawi; it was hosted by Her Excellency, President Joyce Banda. Occupy Nigeria
Occupy Nigeria was a socio-political protest movement that began in Nigeria on Monday, 2 January 2012 in response to the fuel subsidy removal by the Federal Government of President Goodluck Jonathan on Sunday, 1 January 2012. Protests took place across the country, including in the cities of Kano, Surulere, Ojota ( -part of metropolitan Lagos ), Abuja, Minna, and at the Nigerian High Commission in London. The protests have been characterised by civil disobedience, civil resistance, strike actions, demonstrations and online activism. The use of social media services such as Twitter and Facebook was a prominent feature of the protests.
