Frédéric Protat
Frédéric Protat (born 17 July 1966) is a French former professional motorcycle racer. He was the 1991 250cc French superbike champion. Born in Bron, Protat began his career in Grand Prix motorcycle racing in the 1989 season riding an Aprilia in the 250cc class at the 1989 French motorcycle Grand Prix. He later participated with Aprilia again in 1991 in the 250 cc class. Between 1992 and 1994 he took part in championships sometimes with Honda, and sometimes with Aprilia. 1995 saw Protat move up to the 500cc class riding an ROC Yamaha. In 1996, he was the highest ranking privateer in the 500cc class, finishing the season in 15th place. Protat's final season in the 500cc class was in 1997 riding a Honda. He scored 12 points in the 250cc Grand Prix class and 41 points in 500cc category. In 1998 and 1999 he participated in the World Superbike Championship for Ducati. Privateer (motorsport)
In motorsport, a privateer is usually an entrant into a racing event that is not directly supported by an automobile or motorcycle manufacturer. Privateers teams are often found competing in rally, circuit racing and motorcycle racing events and often include competitors who build and maintain their own vehicles and motorcycles. In previous Formula One seasons, privately owned teams would race using the chassis of another team or constructor in preference to building their own car; the Concorde Agreement now prohibits this practice. Increasingly, the term is being used in a Formula One context to refer to teams, such as Williams, that are not at least part-owned by large corporations. Season summary Kevin Schwantz won the 500cc List of Grand Prix motorcycle racing World Champions, 1993 world championship in a season marred by the tragic end to his rival Wayne Rainey's career. Schwantz started the season strongly with four wins by the midpoint of the season. The 24 Heures Motos (often called in English the 24 Hours of Le Mans motorcycle race) is a motorcycle endurance race held annually since 1978 on the Bugatti Circuit, Le Mans, Sarthe, France. The race is organized by the Automobile Club de l'Ouest (ACO) and is part of the Endurance FIM World Championship.
