History Joe Beef was opened on September 19, 2005 by David McMillan, Frederic Morin, and Allison Cunningham with financial guidance and investment by Jeff Baikowitz and David Lisbona. The restaurant took over the location of Café Miguel. The restaurant's name is a homage to Montreal's infamous Joe Beef, an alias for Charles McKiernan. Charles McKiernan (4 December 1835 County Cavan, Ireland – 15 January 1889, Montreal, Quebec, Canada), known commonly as Joe Beef, was a well-known Irish-Canadian Montreal tavern owner, innkeeper and philanthropist. Biography Charles McKiernan earned the sobriquet "Joe Beef" from his time as a Quartermaster with the 10th brigade in the British Army during the Crimean War. Whenever his regiment was running low on food, McKiernan had a knack of somehow finding meat and provisions, hence the name "Joe Beef" . The man, who would become famous in Montreal as a gruff philanthropist, came to the city around 1864 as a part of his artillery regiment. After advancing to Sergeant, he was put in charge of the main military canteen on Saint Helen's Island. Atwater Market is a market hall located in the Saint-Henri area of Montreal, Montreal, Quebec, Canada. It opened in 1933. The interior market is home to many butchers and the Première Moisson bakery and restaurant. The outside market has many farmers' stalls, which sell both local and imported produce, as well as two cheese stores, a wine store and a fish store. The market's Art Deco building was designed by architect Ludger Lemieux, working with his son, Paul Lemieux. It is located on Atwater Street, near the Lachine Canal, as well as Greene Avenue. A pedestrian bridge, which can also be used by bicycles, connects the market to Saint-Patrick Street and to a bicycle path in Pointe-Saint-Charles on the other side of the Lachine Canal.
