Fronton Island (also known as Frontón Island and Isla de San Francisco) is an uninhabited island in the Rio Grande in Starr County, Texas. Geography Fronton Island lies between two channels of the Rio Grande immediately downstream of Fronton, Texas, across from Los Guerra in Miguel Alemán Municipality, Tamaulipas. It is located about downstream of the Falcon Dam and about northwest of Roma, Texas. It measures approximately in area. A smaller Fronton Island () is located just upstream on the Mexican side of the border in Miguel Alemán Municipality. The American island is sometimes called ''Isla de San Francisco'', which can also refer to a larger island on the Mexican side downstream of Ciudad Miguel Alemán. Fronton is a census-designated place (CDP) in Starr County, Texas, United States, bordering the Mexican state of Tamaulipas, close to Ciudad Miguel Alemán. The population was 172 at the 2020 census, a decline from the figure of 180 tabulated in 2010. Geography Fronton is located at (26.425856, -99.076206). Prior to the 2010 census, Fronton CDP had parts taken to form new CDPs, and lost additional area. As a result, the total area was reduced to 0.2 square mile (0.5 km2), all land. Demographics Fronton was first listed as a census designated place in the 2000 U.S. Census. Boundary Treaty Of 1970
The Boundary Treaty of 1970 is a treaty between the United States and Mexico that settled all outstanding boundary disputes and uncertainties related to the Rio Grande (Río Bravo del Norte) border between them. The most significant dispute remaining after the Chamizal Settlement in 1963 involved the location of the boundary in the area of Presidio, Texas, and Ojinaga, Chihuahua. The river channel was relocated to approximate conditions existing prior to the dispute that arose from changes in the course of the river in 1907. The International Boundary and Water Commission was charged with its implementation. Operation Lone Star (OLS) is a joint operation between the Texas Department of Public Safety and the Texas Military Department along the Mexico–United States border in southern Texas. The operation started in 2021 and is ongoing. According to Texas governor Greg Abbott, the operation is intended to counter a rise in illegal immigration, the illegal drug trade, and human smuggling.
