Fritz Bauer Prize
The Fritz Bauer Prize (german: Fritz Bauer-Preis) is a prize awarded by the Humanist Union, established in 1968 in memory of its founder, Fritz Bauer, the longtime Attorney General of Hesse. The Humanist Union presents the award to those who have excelled in contributions to the humanization, liberalization and democratization of the judiciary. Humanist Union
The Humanist Union (German: ''Humanistische Union'', HU) is a German civil rights organization. Their targets include the enforcement of freedom of information, direct democracy and the abolition of the Federal Office for the Protection of the Constitution. Part of its program are the separation of church and state; it takes a critical stance on constitutional privileges granted to philosophical and religious organizations and against religious education. Burkhard Hirsch
Burkhard Hirsch (29 May 1930 – 11 March 2020) was a German politician and civil liberties advocate. A member of the Free Democratic Party (FDP), Hirsch spent 21 years in the Bundestag (1972–1975, 1980–1998). He also served five years as Minister of the Interior of North Rhine-Westphalia (1975–1980). Early life and career Born in Magdeburg, then part of the Prussian Province of Saxony, Hirsch earned his ''Abitur'' in Halle. He studied law and political sciences (''Rechts- und Staatswissenschaften'') at the University of Marburg. He completed his first and second ''Staatsexamen'' in 1954 and 1959, respectively, and earned his Doctor of Laws in 1961 with a doctoral thesis '. Dieter Schenk (born March 14, 1937) is a German author, former high police officer of the Bundeskriminalamt, and a member of Amnesty International. Regine Hildebrandt Regine Hildebrandt (née Radischewski; 26 April 1941 – 26 November 2001) was a German biologist and politician ( Social Democratic Party of Germany). Life Early years Wartime in Germany Regine Radischewski was born in Berlin during the war, the second of her parents' two recorded children. Her father was a pianist who worked as an accompanist at the National Ballet Academy. Her mother would later own a small tobacconist shop. When she was two the family were evacuated from central Berlin to countryside far to the east of Germany, and shortly after that they were bombed out, losing most of their material possessions.
