''Hamlet'', or ''Hamlet: The Drama of Vengeance'', is a 1921 German film adaptation of the William Shakespeare play ''Hamlet'' starring and produced by Danish silent film actress Asta Nielsen. It was directed by Svend Gade and Heinz Schall. The film was shot at the Johannisthal Studios in Berlin. In this interpretation, inspired by Edward P. Vining's book ''The Mystery of Hamlet'', Hamlet is born female and disguised as a male to preserve the lineage. The ''New York Times'' said the film "holds a secure place in class with the best." Plot The opening titles explain that this film is based on a theory from an American literary researcher: "Hamlet is a woman!" The prologue: Queen Gertrude of Denmark gives birth to a girl. ''The Doll Maker of Kiang-Ning'' () is a 1923 German silent fantasy film directed by Robert Wiene and starring Werner Krauss, Lia Eibenschütz, and Ossip Runitsch. A doll maker in Kiangning (modern Nanjing), China crafts a puppet which he is convinced is lifelike. He takes it to exhibit at a public event, but is outraged to find an even more convincing and beautiful doll there. It is in fact a real woman pretending to be a doll, but he becomes so obsessed he attempts to steal her and the film ends with her rescue and his tragic death. The film had its premiere in Berlin in November 1923. It received a universally negative reception from critics who were particularly unimpressed by the attempt to portray Chinese culture using German actors. The Reis telephon was an early sound transmitting device, invented by Philipp Reis in 1857. Reis's first successful work is dated to October 1861. When properly set up, it would allow verbal communication via electronic signals. Many sources credit Reis as the inventor of the first telephone.
