Friendship Medal (Cuba)
The Friendship Medal (la Medalla de la Amistad) is conferred by the Council of State of Cuba on foreigners for their solidarity with the Cuban Revolution, or who have contributed to peace and the progress of humankind. The medal is gold colored with the word "Amistad" (Friendship) in the center (with a single star above the writing). It is surrounded by a garland wreath. The medal hangs on a ribbon of vertical red, white and blue stripes. Radio Havana Cuba ( es, Radio Habana Cuba, RHC) is the official government-run international broadcasting station of Cuba. It can be heard in many parts of the world including the United States on shortwave frequencies. Radio Havana, along with Radio Rebelde, Cubavision Television and other Cuban radio and television broadcasts to North, Central and South America via free-to-air programming from the Hispasat 30W-6 satellite over the Atlantic Ocean and via Internet streaming. Alan Michael Lapsley, SSM (born 2 June 1949) is a South African Anglican priest and social justice activist. Personal life Alan Michael Lapsley was born on 2 June 1949 in New Zealand. He was ordained to the priesthood in Australia where he joined the Anglican religious order the Society of the Sacred Mission (SSM). In 1973 he arrived in Durban, South Africa, as an undergraduate student. Soon thereafter, during the height of apartheid repression, he became a chaplain to students at both black and white universities in Durban. John Gilman (activist)
John Gilman (September 16, 1920 – April 26, 2011) was an American activist and World War II veteran. He first became involved in unionism and left-wing politics in high school in the 1930s. In 1956 he was subpoenaed to testify before the House Un-American Activities Committee. He later campaigned for civil rights and desegregation in Milwaukee, which resulted in the 1966 firebombing of his flooring business by the Grand Dragon of the Illinois Ku Klux Klan. Gilman advocated for improved ties to Cuba and promoted freedom for the Cuban Five. He was also a leader of the Milwaukee Coalition for Peace and Justice and a board member of the Wisconsin Action Coalition. War Service John Gilman was drafted during World War II at the age of 22. July 26th Movement
The 26th of July Movement ( es, Movimiento 26 de Julio; M-26-7) was a Cuban vanguard revolutionary organization and later a political party led by Fidel Castro. The movement's name commemorates its 26 July 1953 attack on the army barracks on Santiago de Cuba in an attempt to start the overthrowing of the dictator Fulgencio Batista. This is considered one of the most important organizations among the Cuban Revolution. At the end of 1956, Castro established a guerrilla base in the Sierra Maestra. This base defeated the troops of Batista on 31 December 1958, setting into motion the Cuban Revolution and installing a government led by Manuel Urrutia Lleó. The Movement fought the Batista regime on both rural and urban fronts.
