''Friends After 3.11'' is a 2011 Japanese documentary film directed and co-edited by Shunji Iwai. The film explores the aftermath of the 2011 Tōhoku earthquake and tsunami, featuring actress Miyuki Matsuda and anti-nuclear activist Kokoro Fujinami. Release ''Friends After 3.11'' premiered on television, being broadcast on SKY PerfecTV! on 1 October 2011. On 15 February 2012, the film screened at the 62nd Berlin International Film Festival. A "theatrical version" of the film was released at Auditorium Shibuya in Tokyo, Japan, on 10 March 2012. Shunji Iwai
is a Japanese filmmaker, video artist, writer and documentary maker. Life and career Iwai was born in Sendai, Miyagi, Japan. He attended Yokohama National University, graduating in 1987. In 1988, he started out in the Japanese entertainment industry by directing TV dramas and music videos. In 1993, his television drama, ''Fireworks'', brought him critical praise and the Directors Guild of Japan New Directors Award for his portrayal of a group of children in the town of Iioka. In 1995, he went on to start his career in feature films, starting with the box-office hit ''Love Letter'', in which he cast pop singer Miho Nakayama in dual roles. ''Love Letter'' also launched the film career of Miki Sakai who won a Japanese Academy Award as 'Newcomer of the Year' for her portrayal of Itsuki Fujii as a young girl. Miyuki Matsuda
is a Japanese actress, the widow of Yūsaku Matsuda, and the sister of Mami Kumagai. At the age of 17 she appeared in a television series, '' Tantei Monogatari'', starring Yūsaku Matsuda, who was then married. They started a relationship and, after Masuda divorced his first wife, Michiko, they married in 1983. Their son Ryuhei Matsuda was born that year. They had two more children: a second son, Shota Matsuda, born in 1985, and a daughter, Yūki Matsuda, born in 1988. She appeared as Ryo Ishibashi's dead wife in the movie ''Audition'' (1999).
