Friend Humphrey
Friend Humphrey (March 8, 1787 – March 15, 1854) was an American merchant, Whig state Senator from New York, and Mayor of Albany from 1849 to 1850. Early life He was born in Simsbury, Connecticut on March 8, 1787. He was one of the sons of Noah Humphrey Jr. (1726–) and Margaret ( Phelps) Humphrey (–). His brother was General Chauncey Humphrey. Career In 1811, he moved to Albany, New York, where he engaged in the leather trade, under the name Friend Humphrey's Son of Albany. He was a Whig member of the New York State Senate (3rd D.) in 1840 and 1841. He was elected as Mayor of Albany from 1843 to 1845, and from 1849 to 1850. As mayor, he was known for the advancement of learning and "sound morals" by closing the markets on Sunday. Personal life Humphrey married Hannah Hinman (1792–1822), a daughter of Dr. Aaron B. Friend Richardson
Friend William Richardson (born William Richardson; December 1, 1865September 6, 1943) was an American newspaper publisher and politician. A member of the Progressive Party and later the Republican Party, Richardson was elected as the California State Treasurer from 1915 to 1923 and shortly afterwards as the 25th governor of California from 1923 to 1927. Richardson's governorship marked a sharp reversal in policies from previous administrations by rolling back many of the Progressive reforms and state governmental agencies put in place by previous governors Hiram Johnson and William Stephens. Early life and career William Richardson was born in December 1865 to William and Rhoda Richardson at Friends Colony, Michigan, a Quaker township located outside of Ann Arbor. Friend Smith Rutherford (September 25, 1820 – June 20, 1864) was an American military officer who was colonel and posthumously appointed brigadier general in the Union Army during the American Civil War. He commanded the 97th Illinois Infantry Regiment during the Vicksburg campaign.
