Frida Felser
Frida Felser (3 March 1872 – 16 February 1941) was a German soprano opera singer and actress. Early life and education Frida Felser was born on 3 March 1872 in Munich and was trained at the Royal Bavarian Music School, where she was a pupil of Max Zenger. In her final year at the school, she was awarded the Baron Königswarter Award, which is typically only given after students complete their studies. Career Felser began her stage career in 1890 in Salzburg as an opera soubrette and then moved to the Stadttheater Würzburg in 1891, and then in 1892 to the Carl Schultze Theater in Hamburg where she worked as a singer and actress until 1895. While still at the Carl Schultze Theater, she performed at the Burgtheater in Vienna as Sassi in ''The Gypsy Baron'' by Johann Strauss II, despite having never sung the role before, and was lauded for her performance and voice and leading to requests for a permanent engagement at there. ''Hansel and Gretel'' (German: ') is an opera by nineteenth-century composer Engelbert Humperdinck, who described it as a ' (fairy-tale opera). The libretto was written by Humperdinck's sister, Adelheid Wette, based on the Grimm brothers' fairy tale of the same name. It is much admired for its folk music-inspired themes, one of the most famous being the "" ("Evening Benediction") from act 2. The idea for the opera was proposed to Humperdinck by his sister, who approached him about writing music for songs that she had written for her children for Christmas based on "Hansel and Gretel". ''Cavalleria rusticana'' (; ) is an opera in one act by Pietro Mascagni to an Italian libretto by Giovanni Targioni-Tozzetti and Guido Menasci, adapted from an 1880 Cavalleria rusticana (short story), short story of the same name and subsequent play by Giovanni Verga. ''The Marriage of Figaro'' (, ), K. 492, is a ''commedia per musica'' (opera buffa) in four acts composed in 1786 by Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart, with an Italian libretto written by Lorenzo Da Ponte. The composer himself penned the French libretto with contributions from Saint-Pol-Roux, a symbolist poet and the inspiration of the surrealists. The Königliches Hoftheater (Royal Court Theatre) in Dresden, Saxony, was a theatre for opera and drama in the royal seat of the Kingdom of Saxony from 1841 and 1869, designed by Gottfried Semper. The Theater des Westens (Theatre of the West) is one of the most famous theatres for musicals and operettas in Berlin, Germany, located at 10–12 in Charlottenburg. It was founded in 1895 for plays. The present house was opened in 1896 and dedicated to opera and operetta. Enrico Caruso made his debut in Berlin here, and the Ballets Russes appeared with Anna Pavlova. ''Carmen'' () is an opera in four acts by the French composer Georges Bizet. The libretto was written by Henri Meilhac and Ludovic Halévy, based on the novella of the same title by Prosper Mérimée.
