Fresno Republican Printery Building
The Fresno Republican Printery Building, at 2130 Kern St. in Fresno, California, was built in 1919 to publish the ''Fresno Morning Republican''. It was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1979. It was designed by architects Glass and Butner. Its National Register nomination states:Architecturally, The Fresno Republican Printery Building (1919) is a sophisticated interpretation of the mezzo-mediterranean styles which evolved during California's regional and rather eclectic architectural revival era (1915-1930). Glass and Butner's decidedly refined and personalized transcription of classically defined details, fused with less strict revival forms, produced an elegantly symmetrical commercial facade, which continues to grace the downtown community with its quiet dignity. Edward Francis Glass
Glass and Butner was an architectural partnership of Edward Francis Glass and Charles Edgar Butner based in Fresno, California. It operated from 1914 to around 1922. The two developed a proposal for a design competition for the Veterans' Memorial Building. Several of their works are listed on the National Register of Historic Places (NRHP). Glass (March 8, 1885 - January 31, 1954) was born in San Francisco and grew up in Fresno, where he attended Fresno High School. He worked as a draftsman for two architectural firms in Philadelphia. He achieved a Certificate of Proficiency in Architecture in 1912, perhaps in Pennsylvania or perhaps in California. Butner (July 31, 1888 - June 10, 1957) was born in Pennsylvania. He served in World War I as a pilot in the United States Army Air Service. The ''Fresno Morning Republican'' (also known as the ''Fresno Republican'', ''Fresno Weekly Republican'' or the ''Fresno Daily Republican'') was a newspaper serving Fresno, California from 1876 through 1932. It was founded by Dr. Chester Rowell and operated by his nephew, Chester Harvey Rowell. History Beginnings The newspaper began on Sept. 23, 1876, when Dr. Chester Rowell, a local physician and politician, published 750 copies of the ''Fresno Weekly Republican''. When the weekly paper became a daily morning publication 11 years later, Rowell renamed it The ''Fresno Morning Republican''. Rowell, one of the few Republicans in Fresno at the time, named his newspaper to reflect his political stance. Rowell was inspired by the Massachusetts-based ''Springfield Republican''.
