''Hardi'' was a 64-gun ship of the line of the French Navy. Career Built from 1748, ''Hardi'' was activated during the Seven Years' War, departing Rochefort in March 1757 with ''Jacinthe'', bound for Martinique where she arrived on 13 May 1757. Incorporated into Admiral du Chaffault's squadron, she took part in the Siege of Louisbourg and in the action of 27 October 1758 off Ushant. In 1778, ''Hardi'' was reactivated for the American Revolutionary War; she departed Toulon on 16 July, under Le Roy de La Grange, to rejoin the squadron under Louis de Fabry. On 20 June 1780, she departed Toulon to join with the squadron under Rear-Admiral de Beausset and take part in the Great Siege of Gibraltar. The next year, on 24 April 1781, she departed Brest with the squadron under La Motte-Picquet and took part in the action of 2 May 1782, in which the French captured 18 British merchantmen bound for St. Eustatius, worth around 5 million pounds. The Battle of Cuddalore was a naval battle between a British fleet, under Admiral Sir Edward Hughes with Admiral L.J. Weiland, and a smaller French fleet, under the Bailli de Suffren, off the coast of India during the American Revolutionary War. This war sparked the Second Mysore War in India. In the battle, taking place near Cuddalore on 20 June 1783, Suffren commanded the engagement from the frigate ''Cléopâtre'' and won what is generally considered a victory.Palmer p.161 Peace had already been agreed upon in Europe, but that news had yet to reach India, making this the final battle of the war. Pierre André De Suffren
Admiral comte Pierre André de Suffren de Saint Tropez, bailli de Suffren (17 July 1729 – Paris, 8 December 1788), Château de Saint-Cannat) was a French Navy officer and admiral. Beginning his career during the War of the Austrian Succession, he fought in the Seven Years' War, where he was taken prisoner at the Battle of Lagos. Promoted to captain in 1772, he was one of the aids of Admiral d'Estaing during the Naval battles of the American Revolutionary War, notably taking part in the Siege of Savannah. Suffren was then appointed to serve in the Indian Ocean under Thomas d'Estienne d'Orves, but assumed command himself at his death. Leading a 15-ship squadron, he fought five intense and evenly matched battles for control of the sea against Vice-Admiral Sir Edward Hughes. The Great Siege of Gibraltar was an unsuccessful attempt by Spain and France to capture Gibraltar from the British during the War of the American Revolution. It was the largest battle in the war by number of combatants. Antoine Hilarion de Beausset (1725 — 1795) was a French Navy officer. He notably served during the War of American Independence. Biography In 1775, Beausset captained the 32-gun frigate ''Oiseau'' in the Escadre d'évolution under Guichen. In 1777, he was captain of the 70-gun ''Dauphin Royal''.
