French Reef
French Reef is a coral reef located within the Florida Keys National Marine Sanctuary. It lies southeast of Key Largo, within the Key Largo Existing Management Area of the Florida Keys National Marine Sanctuary, which is immediately to the east of John Pennekamp Coral Reef State Park. French Reef is northeast of Molasses Reef. Part of the reef lies within a Sanctuary Preservation Area (SPA) of the national marine sanctuary, which is in area. A number of caves and arches in a spur and groove formation are included in the SPA. Stingray
Stingrays are a group of sea Batoidea, rays, a type of cartilaginous fish. Christmas Tree Worm
''Spirobranchus giganteus'', commonly known as the Christmas tree worm, is a tube-building polychaete worm belonging to the family Serpulidae. The ''S. giganteus'' lives in coral reefs in the Indo-Pacific region to the Caribbean. Anatomy and morphology Both its common and Latin names refer to the two chromatically hued spiral structures, the most common feature seen by divers. The multicolored spirals are highly derived structures for feeding and respiration. ''Spirobranchus giganteus'' is similar to most tube-building polychaetes. Spur and groove formations are a geomorphic feature of many coral reefs. They are ridges of reef formed by coral ("spurs") separated by channels ("grooves") which often have sediment or rubble bed. Spur and groove formations vary in their size and distribution worldwide but are a common feature on many forereefs of fringing reefs, barrier reefs, and atolls which are exposed to moderate wave energy. Spur and groove formations are influenced by the incoming surface waves, and the waves induce a circulation pattern of counter rotating circulation cells. Molasses Reef
Molasses Reef is a coral reef located within the Florida Keys National Marine Sanctuary in Florida, United States. It lies to the southeast of Key Largo, within the Key Largo Existing Management Area, which is immediately to the east of John Pennekamp Coral Reef State Park. This reef is within a Sanctuary Preservation Area (SPA). The reef was marked by an unmanned reef light for most of the 20th century. On August 4, 1984, the motor vessel ''Wellwood'', a 122-meter freighter carrying pelletized chicken feed, ran aground on Molasses Reef. The total destruction from the grounding included 5,805 square meters of living corals and injury to 75,000 square meters of reef habitat. The vessel was removed by the US Coast Guard.
