The Frelinghuysen family (; ; ) is an American political dynasty, primarily based in New Jersey, that first emigrated from The Netherlands in 1720. History In 1720, Theodorus Jacobus Frelinghuysen came from The Netherlands to the Raritan Valley in the Province of New Jersey, then a Royal Colony of Kingdom of Great Britain, Great Britain. He was an evangelizing Dutch-Reformed minister during the period of religious fervor known as the Great Awakening. The family has had Frelinghysen Middle School in Morristown named after them. Suzy Frelinghuysen (May 7, 1911 – March 19, 1988), also known as Suzy Morris, was an American abstract painter and opera singer. Early life and personal life Frelinghuysen was born on May 7, 1911, in Newark, New Jersey, to was a daughter of Frederick Frelinghuysen and his wife Estelle B. Kinney, who were married in 1902. She descended from various politicians, including her grandfather, Frederick T. Frelinghuysen (Secretary of State under Chester A. Arthur), and her great-great-uncle, Theodore Frelinghuysen (Senator from New Jersey). She was educated at Miss Fine's School in Princeton, and later studied voice. She displayed an early interest in painting and drawing but never undertook formal art studies. Frederick Frelinghuysen (September 30, 1848 – January 1, 1924) was an American businessman. He was the president of the Mutual Benefit Life Insurance Company in Newark, New Jersey, for 25 years. Theodore Frelinghuysen
Theodore Frelinghuysen (March 28, 1787April 12, 1862) was an American politician who represented New Jersey in the United States Senate. He was the Whig vice presidential nominee in the election of 1844, running on a ticket with Henry Clay. Born in Somerset County, New Jersey, Frelinghuysen established a legal practice in Newark, New Jersey, after graduating from the College of New Jersey. He was the son of Senator Frederick Frelinghuysen and the adoptive father of Secretary of State Frederick Theodore Frelinghuysen. He served as the New Jersey Attorney General from 1817 to 1829 and as a United States Senator from 1829 to 1835. In the Senate, Frelinghuysen strongly opposed President Andrew Jackson's policy of Indian removal. After leaving the Senate, he served as the Mayor of Newark from 1837 to 1838. Jan Herman van Roijen (10 April 1905 – 16 March 1991) was a Dutch diplomat and politician. He was Dutch foreign minister in 1946. Early life Van Roijen was born in Constantinople on 10 April 1905. He was the son of Jan Herman van Roijen Sr (1871–1933) and the American-born Albertina Taylor Winthrop (1871–1934), who married in May 1904. When he was born, his father was a diplomat in Constantinople. John Frederick Frelinghuysen (March 21, 1776 – April 10, 1833) was an American general and lawyer. Biography John Frelinghuysen was born in Millstone, then in the Province of New Jersey, on March 21, 1776, to Frederick Frelinghuysen and Gertrude Schenck. He had four siblings: Catharine, Maria, Theodore, and Frederick. John graduated from Queen's College (now Rutgers University) in 1792 after studying law, and he was admitted to the bar in the state of New Jersey in 1797.
