Freeman (band)
Freeman is an American alternative rock band led by Ween singer/guitarist Aaron Freeman. History Aaron Freeman quit Ween in May 2012, citing his desire to stop his long-time drug and alcohol addiction. He played shows accompanied by Joe Young from 2012 until 2014, when he formed a new band, "Freeman," featuring Chris Boerner on guitar, Brad Cook on bass, Dave Godowsky on keyboards and Kyle Keegan on drums. The band's self-titled debut was released July 22, 2014 on Partisan Records. The band spent the second half of 2014 on the road (although with Young on bass) with Arc Iris. Arc Iris keyboardist Zach Tenorio-Miller also played with Freeman for most of these shows. Alternative rock (also known as alternative music, alt-rock or simply alternative) is a category of rock music that evolved from the independent music underground of the 1970s. Alternative rock acts achieved mainstream success in the 1990s with the likes of the grunge, shoegaze, and Britpop subgenres in the United States and United Kingdom, respectively. During this period, many record labels were looking for "alternatives", as many corporate rock, hard rock, and glam metal acts from the 1980s were beginning to grow stale throughout the music industry. The emergence of Generation X as a cultural force in the 1990s also contributed greatly to the rise of alternative rock. Partisan Records
Partisan Records is an independent record label with offices in London and Los Angeles, as well as in New York City, where the company was co-founded in 2007 by Tim Putnam and Ian Wheeler. The label, initially run out of Putnam’s South Brooklyn apartment, relocated in 2009 to their flagship office in Williamsburg where they still reside. Holy Sons (‘Decline Of The West’) was the first release on the label, and early success followed shortly thereafter with the release of Deer Tick (‘War Elephant’). Ween is an American rock band from New Hope, Pennsylvania, formed in 1984 by Aaron Freeman and Mickey Melchiondo, better known by their respective stage names, Gene and Dean Ween. Generally categorized as an alternative rock band, the band are known for their irreverent, highly eclectic catalog of songs inspired by funk, soul, country, gospel, prog, psychedelia, R&B, heavy metal, and punk rock. Ween self-released several cassette albums from their formation until 1989. Gene Ween
Aaron Freeman (born March 17, 1970), better known by his stage name Gene Ween, is an American singer, guitarist and a founding member of the experimental alternative rock group Ween. Freeman, along with childhood friend Dean Ween (Mickey Melchiondo), started the group in the mid-1980s. Freeman announced his departure from Ween in 2012, shortly after releasing ''Marvelous Clouds'', his first solo album. After leaving Ween, he stopped using the name Gene Ween and performed under his birth name Aaron Freeman. In 2014 he formed a new five-piece band called Freeman. Arc Iris is an American indie rock band from Providence, Rhode Island, United States, that began in 2012 as a solo project of Jocie Adams, formerly a member of The Low Anthem. Arc Iris has had several lineup changes since their inception and have since settled on a trio that is the nucleus of Jocie Adams (lead vocals, guitar), Zach Tenorio Miller (keyboards), Ray Belli (drums). ''Freeman'' is the eponymous debut and only studio album by American rock band Freeman. Background Aaron Freeman left Ween in May 2012. He played shows both solo and accompanied by Joe Young from 2012-2014. After moving to Woodstock, New York and teaching at Paul Green's School of Rock, Freeman began working on material for a new album. He assembled musicians from the Brooklyn, New York area as well as North Carolina to record the album for Partisan Records. The new band, "Freeman" hit the road in July 2014 in support of the album. The live version of Freeman featured Joe Young on bass and Zach Tenorio-Miller on keyboards, along with Chris Boerner and Kyle Keegan, who played on the album.
