Freedom Comes High
''Freedom Comes High'' is a 1944 dramatic short film commissioned by the United States Government during World War II and directed by Lewis Allen. Synopsis The playlet involves a young woman coming home, tired, after a busy day at a war plant. Each time she comes in there is a letter from her husband overseas, and she remembers their conversations before he went off to war. She was concerned about him, because she felt it was a "young man's war" and he should stay home with her and the baby. However he was insistent that his country needed him. The plot then turns to the husband trying to manage his ship while it is being attacked by a submarine. The next day, the woman receives another letter from her husband, who is shown in double exposure, reminding her that freedom comes high, often at the price of human lives. Lewis Allen (director)
Lewis Allen (25 December 1905 – 3 May 2000) was a British-born director whose credits included classic television series and a diverse range of films. Allen worked mainly in the United States, working on Broadway and directing 18 feature films between 1944 and 1959. From the mid-1950s he moved increasingly into television and worked on a number of the most popular shows of the time in the US. Career Allen was born in the small Shropshire town of Oakengates and attended Tettendan Hall in Staffordshire. James Craig (actor)
James Craig (born James Henry Meador, February 4, 1912 – June 27, 1985) was an American actor. He is best known for appearances in films like '' Kitty Foyle'' (1940) and ''The Devil and Daniel Webster'' (1941), and his stint as a leading man at Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer in the 1940s where he appeared in films like '' The Human Comedy'' (1943). Charles Quigley (February 12, 1906 – August 5, 1964) was an American actor. Early years Born in New Britain, Connecticut, Quigley was the son of Charles P. Quigley, who was sales manager for a hardware business. He was a 1924 graduate of New Britain High School, and he attended the Academy of Dramatic Arts in New York. Career On stage, Quigley acted for a year with a stock theater company in Portland, Maine, after which he worked with a touring company of ''Expressing Willie''.
