Free Baptist Union
The Free Baptist Union (Swedish: ) was a Swedish Baptist Christian denomination that began in 1872, when Baptist preacher was expelled from the Baptist Union of Sweden, after having been accused of heresy. The Free Baptist Union gained followers mainly in Scania, Gotland, Dalarna, Västmanland and Västergötland. In the early 1900s, the denomination peaked at around 5000 members. Gotland
Gotland (; ; ''Gutland'' in Gutnish), also historically spelled Gottland or Gothland (), is Sweden's largest island. The Evangelical Free Church in Sweden () is a Baptists, Baptist Christian denomination in Sweden. It is affiliated with the European Baptist Federation and the Baptist World Alliance. The headquarters is in Örebro. History Evangeliska Frikyrkan was founded in 1997 as a merger of the Örebro Mission (, founded in 1892 as Örebro Missionary Society), the Free Baptist Union (, founded in 1872) and the Swedish Holiness Union, Holiness Union (, founded in 1887). In 2011, it had 32,223 members. As of 2015, it has 304 churches and 34,400 members. According to a census published by the association in 2023, it claimed 32,500 members and 300 churches. Swedish Holiness Union
The Swedish Holiness Union (Swedish: ) was a Swedish free church denomination from 1887 to 1994. Originally, the Holiness Union was a mission society, but gradually it became a denomination with a Baptist and evangelical orientation. In 1994, after five years of cooperation, the Holiness Union merged with the Free Baptist Union () into , which in turn merged with Örebro Mission in 1997 to form the denomination , called the Evangelical Free Church in Sweden since 2002. Västmanland ( or ) is a historical Swedish province, or , in middle Sweden. It borders Södermanland, Närke, Värmland, Dalarna and Uppland. Västmanland means "West Man Land" or, less literally, "The Land of the Western Men", where the "western men" () were the people living west of Uppland, the core province of early Sweden. Baptist Union Of Sweden
The Baptist Union of Sweden () was a Baptist union in Sweden. In 2011–2012, they merged to form a new denomination, Joint Future Church, now called Uniting Church in Sweden. The first known Baptist church in Sweden was organized on September 21, 1848, in Vallersvik, where a group of people committed the first-known Baptist baptism in Sweden. The Conventicle Act was in effect at the time, outlawing all religious meetings other than those of the Lutheran Church of Sweden. The new movement's leader, F.O. Nilsson, was exiled. Others were fined or jailed. A few years later, in 1858, the law was abolished, and religious groups other than the official state church (free churches) were allowed to work.
