Division Of Tasmania
The Division of Tasmania was an Divisions of the Australian House of Representatives, Australian electoral division covering Tasmania. The five-member statewide seat existed from the inaugural 1901 Australian federal election, 1901 election until the 1903 Australian federal election, 1903 election. Each elector cast one vote. Unlike most of the other states, Tasmania had not been split into individual single-member electorates. The other exception was the seven-member Division of South Australia. The statewide seats were abolished at a redistribution conducted two months prior to the 1903 election and were subsequently replaced with single-member divisions, one per displaced member, with each elector now casting a single vote. The electoral district of North Hobart, sometimes referred to as Hobart North, was an electoral district of the Tasmanian House of Assembly. It was based in Tasmania's capital city, Hobart. The seat was created as a single-member seat ahead of the 1871 election following the dissolution of the multi-member Hobart Town seat. Tetley Gant, Order of St Michael and St George, CMG (9 July 1853 – 7 February 1928) was an Australian barrister, Tasmanian politician and Chancellor (education), chancellor. Early life – England Tetley was born in Manningham, Bradford, Manningham, Yorkshire, England to James Greaves Tetley Gant, (1815–1873), Bradford, a Bradford solicitor, and Sarah Ann Gaunt. He attended Rugby School and St John's College, Oxford, St John's College, in Oxford. Career – Australia In 1884, Gant migrated to Australia and settled in Hobart. His legal qualifications allowed him to enter the Supreme Court of Tasmania and in 1888, Gant started a legal partnership with Sir Neil Elliott Lewis. Gant was elected to the seat of Electoral division of Buckingham, Buckingham in the Tasmanian Legislative Council in May 1901, retaining it until August 1927. The 1901 Australian federal election for the inaugural Parliament of Australia was held in Australia on Friday 29 March and Saturday 30 March 1901. The elections followed Federation and the establishment of the Commonwealth of Australia on 1 January 1901. All 75 seats in the Australian House of Representatives, six of which were uncontested, as well as all 36 seats in the Australian Senate, were up for election. After the initial confusion of the Hopetoun Blunder, the first Prime Minister of Australia, Edmund Barton, went into the inaugural 1901 federal election as the appointed head of a Protectionist Party caretaker government. While the Protectionists came first on seats, they fell short of a majority.
