Frederick Stewart (colonial Administrator)
Frederick Stewart () (17 October 1836 – 29 September 1889) was an educationist and British colonial administrator, who served as the Colonial Secretary in Hong Kong from 1887 to 1889. He is considered ''"The Founder of Hong Kong Education"'' for integrating a modern western-style education model into the Colonial Hong Kong school systems. Stewart could speak fluent Cantonese, which was vital to his work in the 19th century. Early life The son of James Stewart and Jean Brown, Stewart was born in Rathen, Aberdeenshire in Scotland on 30 October 1836. He was educated in King's College at the University of Aberdeen. The Chief Secretary for Administration, commonly known as the Chief Secretary of Hong Kong, is the most senior principal official of the Government of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region. Francis Fleming
Sir Francis Fleming (31 July 1842 – 4 December 1922) ( Chinese: 菲林明) was a British administrator who held appointments in eleven colonies. The son of James Fleming (1812–1887), Q.C. of Dorset Square and Julia Matilda (1811–1875) daughter of Major John Canning (1775–1824) and niece of Francis Canning (1769–1831) of Foxcote Warwick. He attended Downside School near Bath, studied law at the Middle Temple, and became a barrister in 1866. Hilgrove Clement Nicolle
Hilgrove Clement Nicolle (19 July 1855 - 11 December 1908) was a British civil servant, who served as the Auditor General of Cyprus (1883-1889), the Auditor for Hong Kong (1890-1904), and the Treasurer of Ceylon (1904-1908). Hilgrove Clement Nicolle was born on 19 July 1855 in Saint Helier, Jersey, the seventh child and fourth son of Josué Manger Nicolle (1810-1886) and Harriet Beresford née Nicolson (1817-1898), the daughter of Major Gideon Nicolson. Along with his siblings Nicolle attended Victoria College, Jersey. He started his career working for the London and Westminster Bank in London. In February 1880 he joined the Foreign Office, and was appointed an assistant auditor at British Cyprus. He served three years before being promoted to Auditor General of Cyprus. William Henry Marsh
Sir William Henry Marsh (1827–21 July 1906; Chinese Translated Name: 馬殊; 馬師 also infrequently used) was a British colonial administrator, who governed Hong Kong twice. The first tenure started in March 1882, and ended in March 1883, when Sir George Bowen succeeded him as the 9th Governor of Hong Kong. James Stewart Lockhart
Sir James Haldane Stewart Lockhart, (25 May 1858 – 26 February 1937) was a British colonial official in Hong Kong and China for more than 40 years. He also served as Commissioner of British Weihaiwei from 1902 to 1921. Additionally, he was a Sinologist who made pioneering translations. Early life Born as James Haldane Lockhart in Ardsheal, Argyllshire, Scotland, his parents were Anna Rebecca Charlotte (Stewart) and Miles Lockhart of Lismore, Argyll. His grandfather was banker James Lockhart. He attended King William's College (1868–72), George Watson's College, and the University of Edinburgh, and attempted to enter the civil service in India. Sir James Russell (22 November 1842 – 1 September 1893) was an Irish colonial administrator in Hong Kong and served as Chief Justice of Hong Kong from 1888 to 1892. Ernst Johann Eitel or alternatively Ernest John Eitel (13 February 1838 – 10 November 1908) was a German-born Protestant who became a notable missionary in China and civil servant in British Hong Kong, where he served as Inspector of Schools from 1879 to 1896. Early life in Germany Eitel was born in Württemberg, Germany. Eitel studied initially at the Theological Seminary, Schönthal. In 1860, he graduated from the University of Tübingen with Master of Arts (and Doctor of Philosophy in 1871).
