Upper Marlboro, officially the Town of Upper Marlboro, is the county seat of Prince George's County, Maryland, United States. Etymology Upper Marlboro was established in 1706 as "Marlborough Town", after John Churchill, 1st Duke of Marlborough, whose heraldic arms is depicted on town insignia. In 1744, the town was renamed to "Upper Marlborough". In the late 19th century, the town's name changed from Upper Marlborough to Upper Marlboro. Prince George's Enquirer And Southern Maryland Advertiser
The ''Prince George's Enquirer and Southern Maryland Advertiser'' was a weekly newspaper published from 1882 to January 30, 1925, in Upper Marlboro, Maryland. It replaced a paper that had been established during the American Civil War by Michael J. Slayman, ''The Prince Georgian and Southern Maryland Advertiser''. The ''Enquirer'' was founded by Joseph K. Roberts and Frederick Sasscer, Jr., both politically well-connected lawyers from Upper Marlboro. Roberts died in 1888, but Sasscer continued to edit the paper and eventually became its owner, solidifying the paper's political stance as staunchly Democratic. In 1909, an apprentice working for the paper, Samuel A. Wyvill, became part owner. Together, Sasscer and Wyvill bought the ''Marlboro Gazette'' from Mary and Charles Wilson on January 30, 1925, and named the new merged paper ''The Enquirer-Gazette''. Lansdale Ghiselin Sasscer
Lansdale Ghiselin Sasscer (September 30, 1893 – November 5, 1964) represented the fifth district of the state of Maryland in the United States House of Representatives for seven terms from 1939 to 1953. Sasscer was born in Upper Marlboro, Maryland, and graduated from Dickinson School of Law in Carlisle, Pennsylvania in 1914. He was admitted to the bar the same year and commenced practice in Upper Marlboro. During World War I, he served from 1917 to 1919, being overseas for thirteen months as a first lieutenant in the Fifty-ninth Artillery of the United States Army. After the War, Sasscer resumed the practice of law, and served as a member of the Maryland State Senate from 1922 to 1938, serving as President of the Senate in 1935 and 1937. He was delegate to the 1924 and 1936 Democratic National Conventions, and vice chairman of the committee on reorganization of the State government in 1939. Duval High School was a government-funded co-educational bi-modal partially academically selective and comprehensive secondary day school, located in Armidale, New South Wales, Australia. Founded in 1974, the school enrolled approximately 600 students in 2018, from Year 7 to Year 12, of whom 17 percent identified as Indigenous Australians and 15 percent were from a language background other than English.
