Frederick Mills (engineer)
Frederick Mills (1898 – 22 June 1949) was Chief Mechanical Engineer of the Western Australian Government Railways from 1940 until his death in 1949. He was seconded to the federal government during World War II and was known throughout his career for designing a number of the influential steam locomotives for operation in Western Australia, including a number of controversial designs. No fewer than four Royal Commissions were held into various aspects of WAGR operations – including an examination of the safety of the Australian Standard Garratt locomotive and other aspects pertinent to its design and development – during his tenure, all of them into issues against which Mills himself fought unceasingly. WAGR S Class
The WAGR S class was a class of 4-8-2 steam locomotives built by the Midland Railway Workshops between 1943 and 1947 and operated by the Western Australian Government Railways (WAGR). Details of design The S class locomotives were built with a 4-8-2 wheel arrangement, a configuration commonly used in Australia for heavy goods locomotives, smaller driving wheels giving increased tractive effort at the cost of reduced speed. George Lawson (Australian Politician)
George Lawson (14 August 1880 – 25 November 1966) was an Australian trade union official and politician. He was a member of the Australian Labor Party (ALP) and served as a member of the House of Representatives from 1931 to 1961, representing the seat of Brisbane. He was Minister for Transport in the Curtin government from 1941 to 1943. He had a long involvement in the labour movement in Queensland. Early life Lawson was born on 14 August 1880 in the South Pine River district near Caboolture, Queensland. He was the eighth child born to Irish immigrant parents Ellen (née Rilley) and Alexander Lawson; his father was a farmer. Lawson was educated at the state school at Warner and subsequently worked as a carrier for a Brisbane firm. Sir Harold Winthrop Clapp Order of the British Empire, KBE (7 May 1875 – 21 October 1952) was a transport administrator who over the course of thirty years had a profound effect on Australia's railway network.
