Frederick Cook (Australian Politician)
Frederick Albert Cook, known by his second name Albert, (22 March 1883 – 23 December 1971) was an Australian politician. He was born at Baddaginnie, Victoria, Baddaginnie to storekeeper Frederick John Cook and Maria Dosser. After a state education he carried on his father's stores in Baddaginnie and Benalla, Victoria, Benalla. On 26 December 1915 he married Neva Garland Mowatt, with whom he had five children; a second marriage on 20 April 1943 to Kathleen Flora Curry produced two further children. He served on Shire of Benalla, Benalla Shire Council from 1924 to 1964 and was twice president (1931–32, 1953–54). John McEwen
Sir John McEwen (29 March 1900 – 20 November 1980) was an Australian politician and farmer who served as the 18th prime minister of Australia from 1967 to 1968, in a caretaker capacity following the disappearance of prime minister Harold Holt. He was the leader of the Country Party from 1958 to 1971, serving as the inaugural deputy prime minister of Australia from 1968 to 1971. McEwen was born in Chiltern, Victoria. He was orphaned at the age of seven and raised by his grandmother, initially in Wangaratta and then in Dandenong. McEwen left school when he was 13 and joined the Australian Army at the age of 18, but the war ended before his unit was shipped out. Baddaginnie, Victoria
Baddaginnie is a town in Victoria, Australia. It is located on the North East railway line, in the Rural City of Benalla, 12 kilometres south-west of Benalla itself on the old Hume Highway. It is situated in mainly flat unforested country, one kilometre west of Baddaginnie Creek. At the , Baddaginnie had a population of 347. Etymology This name was related to Sri Lankan labourers who worked in a railway line project in early 1900. Labourers didn't know English and they only used word "Baddaginnie" during the time of working. "Baddaginnie" meaning "බඩගිනි" in Sinhala. History The town was surveyed in 1857, named after the nearby Baddaginnie Creek, but settlement was slow, a Post Office finally opening on 16 September 1879.
