Frederick Brawn
Frederick William Brawn (21 November 1857 – 24 July 1936) was an Australian politician. He was born in Creswick to storekeeper James Brawn and Sarah Pearce. He attended Creswick Grammar School and became a commission agent in Bloomfield and then a shareholder in Ballarat. On 27 April 1886 he married Alice Vipond; later, following her death in 1917, he married Florence Reddin on 14 June 1919. He was also later a farmer at Dowling Forest. He served on Ballarat City Council from 1904 to 1919, and was twice mayor (1907–08, 1915–16). In 1907 he won a by-election for Wellington Province in the Victorian Legislative Council. Creswick, Victoria
Creswick is a town in west-central Victoria, Australia, 18 kilometres north of Ballarat and 122 kilometres northwest of Melbourne, in the Shire of Hepburn. It is 430 metres above sea level. At the 2016 census, Creswick had a population of 3,170. Creswick was named after the Creswick family, the pioneer settlers of the region. History The area was inhabited by the Dja Dja Wurrung people before white settlement. The pioneer white settlers were Henry, Charles and John Creswick, three brothers who started a large sheep station in 1842. Creswick is a former gold-mining town, established during the Victorian gold rushes in the 1850s. The Post Office opened on 1 September 1854 but was named Creswick's Creek until around 1857. The population reached a peak of 25,000 during the gold rush. Today, local industries include forestry, grazing and agriculture. John Young McDonald
John Young McDonald (8 August 1837 – 7 September 1917) was a Scottish-born Australian politician. He was born in Leith; his mother's name was Margaret Dow. George Bolster
George Bolster (9 September 1877 – 26 October 1948) was an Australian politician. He was born in Haddon to coach proprietor Richard Bolster and Ellen Ross. He attended state school and went to Western Australia in around 1900 with his brother to follow his father's trade. He returned to Victoria around 1902 and took over his mother's Ballarat grocery. On 7 June 1909 he married Eliza Jane Dimsey, with whom he had four sons. He expanded his business to include a number of stores around Ballarat, and also served on Ballarat City Council from 1925 to 1934, with a period as mayor from 1929 to 1930. In 1934 he was elected to the Victorian Legislative Council for Wellington Province, representing the United Australia Party. Alfred Pittard
Alfred James Pittard (known as Jim Pittard) (3 August 1868 – 16 May 1950) was an Australian politician. He was born in Ballarat West to bootmaker James Alfred Pittard and Annie Drew. He followed his father into the shoemaking business, and eventually took over the family firm. He served on Ballarat East Town Council from 1901 to 1919 (mayor 1913–14, 1920–21) and Ballarat City Council from 1919 to 1927 (mayor 1926–27). On 6 March 1895 he had married Alice Mary Crocker, with whom he had two children; one of them, Alan, would later serve a term in the Australian House of Representatives. In 1931 he was elected to the Victorian Legislative Council for Wellington, moving to Ballarat Province in 1937. Henry Cuthbert
Sir Henry Cuthbert , (29 July 1829 – 5 April 1907) was a politician in Victoria (Australia), member of the Victorian Legislative Council. Cuthbert was born in Boyle, County Roscommon, Ireland, the eldest son of John Cuthbert. Cuthbert was educated at Drogheda Grammar School, winning the classical medal, and studied law. In 1854 he was admitted a solicitor in Ireland, and the same year left for Victoria, where he was at once admitted to practice. In 1855 he went to Ballarat, and, besides being successful in his profession, became largely interested in mining. He was the original promoter of the Buninyong Gold Mining Company. In September 1874 Cuthbert was returned to the Legislative Council, unopposed, for the South-Western Province, and in November 1882 was transferred to the new Wellington Province. United Australia Party
The United Australia Party (UAP) was an Australian political party that was founded in 1931 and dissolved in 1945. The party won four federal elections in that time, usually governing in coalition with the Country Party. It provided two prime ministers: Joseph Lyons ( 1932–1939) and Robert Menzies ( 1939–1941). The UAP was created in the aftermath of the 1931 split in the Australian Labor Party. Six fiscally conservative Labor MPs left the party to protest the Scullin Government's financial policies during the Great Depression. Led by Joseph Lyons, a former Premier of Tasmania, the defectors initially sat as independents, but then agreed to merge with the Nationalist Party and form a united opposition.
