Fredericka Carolyn "Fredi" Washington (December 23, 1903 – June 28, 1994) was an American stage and film actress, civil rights activist, performer, and writer. Washington was of African-American descent. She was one of the first black American to gain recognition for film and stage work in the 1920s and 1930s. Washington was active in the Harlem Renaissance (1920s–1930s), her best known role being Peola in the 1934 film version of ''Imitation of Life'', where she plays a young light-skinned woman who decides to pass as white. Her last film role was in '' One Mile from Heaven'' (1937), after which she left Hollywood and returned to New York to work in theatre and civil rights activism. Freddie Washington (c. 1900 in Houston – Unknown) was an American jazz pianist. Washington moved to California around the year 1918, where he joined Kid Ory's band in 1921. He recorded with Ory's band, and it is for his role in these sessions that he is primarily known. He led his own band in the 1920s and 1930s, in addition to playing with Ed Garland and Paul Howard. He recorded on Capitol Records in 1944 with Zutty Singleton, and performed with Kid Ory's band on a live broadcast of the wartime variety show ''The Orson Welles Almanac'' (July 12, 1944). Washington continued playing into the 1960s. ''Welcome Back, Kotter'' is an American sitcom starring Gabe Kaplan as a high-school teacher in charge of a racially and ethnically diverse remedial education class called the "Sweathogs." Recorded in front of a live studio audience, the series aired on ABC from September 9, 1975, through May 17, 1979. It provided John Travolta with his breakthrough role. Premise The show stars stand-up comedian and actor Gabriel "Gabe" Kaplan as the main character, Gabe Kotter.
