Freddie Cox
Frederick James Arthur Cox Distinguished Flying Cross (United Kingdom), DFC (1 November 1920 – 7 August 1973) was an English association football, football player and manager. Playing as a outside forward, winger, he scored 25 goals from 182 appearances in the English Football League, Football League either side of the Second World War, and was on the winning side for Arsenal F.C., Arsenal in the 1950 FA Cup Final. He then spent 14 years as a manager at Football League level. During the war, he served as a fighter pilot in the Royal Air Force, and was awarded the Distinguished Flying Cross (United Kingdom), Distinguished Flying Cross. Life and career Cox was born in Reading, Berkshire. He played for St George's Lads Club before joining Tottenham Hotspur F.C., Tottenham Hotspur as a youngster. Northfleet United
Northfleet United Football Club was a football club based in Northfleet, Kent. Around 1890 organised team football was being played in the town and in 1892 the Northfleet F.C. club was founded. It flourished for a few years in the mid-1890s until its demise in 1898. Several years later in 1903 Northfleet United F.C. was founded. In its playing existence (1903–1939) the United club achieved unrivalled success - they won more trophies than any other senior club competing in Kent-based competitions over that period: they were Kent League Champions on ten occasions, Kent League Cup winners on five occasions and Kent Senior Cup winners nine times. Ian McPherson (footballer)
Ian Buchanan McPherson (26 July 1920 – 20 March 1983) was a Scottish footballer whose clubs included Rangers, Notts County and Arsenal. Career A native of Glasgow, McPherson first joined Rangers as a youth player and made his debut in a 3–1 victory over Arbroath on 26 August 1939, although World War II intervened during the early part of his career, and all competitive football was suspended. After 15 goals in 16 wartime appearances, McPherson left Rangers to serve in the RAF and was awarded the Distinguished Flying Cross in 1944 and 1945. After returning from duty, he joined Notts County in 1945, playing in regional wartime leagues. After a single season with the Magpies, McPherson was signed by Arsenal in August 1946 (in part-exchange for Reg Cumner), in time for the resumption of competitive League football that autumn. Walley Barnes
Walley Barnes (16 January 1920 – 4 September 1975) was a Welsh footballer and broadcaster. Whilst playing as a defender he featured for Southampton and Arsenal and captained the Welsh national side. Early career He was born in Brecon to English parents as his father who was a soldier, was at the time stationed there. Barnes initially played as an inside-forward for Southampton in wartime games, making 32 appearances between 1941 and 1943, scoring 14 goals in all Arsenal Barnes was then spotted and signed by Arsenal in September 1943. At and away from Highbury he played in virtually every position on the pitch for Arsenal in wartime matches including a match where he featured as a goalkeeper, but suffered a serious knee injury which was incurred in 1944. Reginald Lewis (7 March 1920 – 2 April 1997) was an English footballer. Playing as a striker, Lewis solely featured for Arsenal throughout his footballing career. Lewis is Arsenal's 12th highest goalscorer of all time. Playing career Born in Bilston, Staffordshire and raised in South London Lewis spent his entire career at Arsenal, however as a youth team player he played for Margate FC which in those days was a nursery club for The Arsenal. He joined the club as a schoolboy in 1935, and scored on his debut against Everton on 1 January 1938. He made only four appearances in 1937-38, however, and as a result missed out on a League Championship winners' medal.
