Fred Woods Trail
The Fred Woods Trail is a loop hiking trail in Elk State Forest in north-central Pennsylvania, United States. The trail visits three significant vistas over the valley of the Bennett Branch of Sinnemahoning Creek, and several large rock formations. The trail is known for requiring almost no climbing to reach its vistas on top of the Allegheny Plateau. History and route The Fred Woods Trail was developed in 1981, to commemorate a forestry worker who had died in a heavy machinery accident in 1975. The trail was built by the Youth Conservation Corps, who expanded some previous undeveloped trails.Thwaites, p. 85 The trailhead is reached by driving steeply uphill for 3.9 miles on the unimproved Mason Hill Road (known as Castle Garden Road on some maps) from Pennsylvania Route 555, at a junction about one mile west of Driftwood. Elk County is a county in the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania. As of the 2020 United States census, the population was 30,990. Its county seat is Ridgway. History The community takes its name from Driftwood Branch Sinnemahoning Creek (in older sources called "Driftwood Creek"). Elk State Forest
Elk State Forest is a Pennsylvania State Forest in Pennsylvania Bureau of Forestry District #13. The main offices are located in Emporium in Cameron County, Pennsylvania. The forest is located on , chiefly in Cameron and Elk counties, with small parts of the forest also in Clinton, McKean and Potter counties. History The history of Elk State Forest is very similar to that of the other state forests in Pennsylvania. The land was primarily acquired from lumber companies during the early 20th century. Vast stands of old-growth forest had been harvested by the lumber companies during the mid-to-late 19th century. Allegheny Plateau
The Allegheny Plateau , in the United States, is a large dissected plateau area of the Appalachian Mountains in western and central New York, northern and western Pennsylvania, northern and western West Virginia, and eastern Ohio. It is divided into the unglaciated Allegheny Plateau and the glaciated Allegheny Plateau. The plateau extends southward into western West Virginia, eastern Kentucky and Tennessee where it is instead called the Cumberland Plateau. Youth Conservation Corps
The Youth Conservation Corps (YCC) is a paid summer youth work program in federally managed lands. The National Park Service, US Forest Service, US Fish and Wildlife Service and Bureau of Land Management employ teens each summer to participate in the YCC. The YCC has introduced young Americans to conservation opportunities in public lands since the program was created in 1970. In the late seventies and early eighties the program included a grant-in-aid component that funded state and local YCC projects nationwide. This element fell to 1982 budget cuts, but several states continued the effort with their own funds. Some employees currently working in land management agencies were introduced to their profession through the YCC. Slot Canyon
A slot canyon is a long, narrow channel or drainageway with sheer rock walls that are typically eroded into either sandstone or other sedimentary rock. A slot canyon has depth-to-width ratios that typically exceed 10:1 over most of its length and can approach 100:1. The term is especially used in the semiarid southwestern United States and particularly the Colorado Plateau.
