Fred Small (singer-songwriter)
Frederick Emerson Small (born November 6, 1952), known publicly as Fred Small, is an American singer-songwriter. He began his career as a lawyer and later became a Unitarian Universalist minister. Small graduated from Yale University and the University of Michigan, from which he earned both a J.D. degree and a master's in environmental policy. His first position was as staff attorney for the Conservation Law Foundation. His songs often make a political or ethical statement. Among his best-known songs are "Heart of the Appaloosa", "Everything Possible", "Peace Is", and "Cranes Over Hiroshima". His debut album, ''Love's Gonna Carry Us'' (1981), featured Small singing and accompanying himself on guitar. As his fame and success increased, so too did the production level of his albums, as he included more instrumentation, and appearances by other artists, including instrumental and vocal backing by popular New England folk artists. Fred Small (American Football)
John Frederick "Fred" Small (July 15, 1963 – June 24, 2003) was a professional American football player who played for the Pittsburgh Steelers of the National Football League (NFL) in 1985. Born and raised in Los Angeles, Small graduated from John C. Fremont High School in 1981. He played college football at the University of Washington in Seattle under head coach Don James. An outside linebacker in his senior season in 1984, the Huskies won the Orange Bowl and were second in the final rankings. Small was selected in the ninth round of the 1985 NFL Draft by the Steelers. After leaving football, he became a police officer in southern California and joined the Inglewood Police Department in 1998. Frederick R. Smalls (born January 17, 1963) is a former American football linebacker. He played college football at West Virginia. He was drafted in the seventh round (182nd overall) of the 1986 NFL Draft by the San Diego Chargers. College career Smalls, who was born in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, enrolled at West Virginia University in 1982. In his freshman season, Smalls recorded six tackles, a fumble recovery. In, 1983 as a sophomore, he recorded 13 tackles and a pass break-up as a backup. In 1984, as a junior, Smalls earned the starting position. That season, he recorded 87 tackles, two interceptions, a fumble recovery, and two sacks. He was named to the NEA All-America team. As a senior, in 1985, Smalls totaled 97 tackles, five forced fumbles, a fumble recovery, and three sacks. He was also named to the AP All-East team.
