Fred Martinson
Fred Martinson (February 22, 1947 – February 5, 2012) was an American motorcycle trials rider. Martinson was four times AHRMA Vintage National Trials Champion, winning titles in 2003, 2008, 2009 and 2010, competing in approximately 615 trials through his career. In 2011 he was inducted into the NATC Hall of Fame. The Martinson family are still deeply involved in the sport with Fred's sons Derek and Brian competing at National level for many years, and now grandchildren are starting to also compete . Biography Fred was born in Virginia, Minnesota in 1947 and moved to Casper, Wyoming in 1981 . It was while in Wyoming that Fred became involved with motorcycle trials riding, competing in his first event in 1983 . As a long time member of the Wyoming Motorcycle Trials Association Fred was involved in setting eleven NATC events . Motorcycle Trial
Motorcycle trials, also known as observed trials, often called simply trial or trials, is a non-speed event on specialized motorcycles. The sport is most popular in the United Kingdom and Spain, though there are participants around the globe. Modern trials motorcycles are distinctive in that they have evolved to become extremely lightweight, lack seating (they are designed to be ridden standing up) and have suspension travel that is short, relative to a motocross or enduro motorcycle. Motorcycle trials is often utilized by competitors in other motorcycle sports (such as enduro, motocross or road racers) as a way to cross-train, as trials requires fine throttle, balance, and machine control. AHRMA
AHRMA (American Historic Racing Motorcycle Association) is a not-for-profit organization dedicated to preserving, restoring and competing on historic motorcycles. With over 3000 members, AHRMA is the leading vintage motorcycle racing group in North America and one of the largest in the world. The association's enthusiastic membership reflects this country's strong interest in classic bikes. NATC Trials Championship
The North American Trials Council Championship is the official US National Trials Championship and has been held since 1974. History In 1974 The NATC joined forces with the AMA and put together a nine-round series as the US National Trials Championship. Lane Leavitt showed his class by winning five of the eight rounds he competed in. In second place was up and coming star Marland Whaley on the Montesa with early series leader Don Sweet bringing his Yamaha home in third. Factory Honda rider Marland Whaley stomped all over the championship in 1977 taking eight wins from eight starts, leaving the rest to fight it out for second spot. That battle was won by Bernie Schreiber who tied with Don Sweet for second but took the nod on highest place finishes throughout the season.
