Fred Gallagher (footballer)
Fred Gallagher (born 1 January 1931) is a former Australian rules footballer who played for Essendon in the Victorian Football League (VFL) during the 1950s. Career Initially a half forward, Gallagher hailed from Rosebud. His 34 goals in 1957 was enough to top the goal-kicking at Essendon, helped by a haul of 12 goals and four behinds from full-forward in their round eight win over Geelong at Windy Hill. In doing so he joined John Coleman and Ted Freyer as the only players to have kicked 12 goals or more in a game for Essendon. Essendon Football Club
The Essendon Football Club, nicknamed the Bombers, is a professional Australian rules football club. The club plays in the Australian Football League (AFL), the game's premier competition. The club was formed by the McCracken family in their Ascot Vale home "Alisa", and while the exact date is unknown, it is generally accepted to have been in 1872. The club’s first recorded game took place on 7 June 1873 against a Carlton Second 20. From 1878 until 1896, the club played in the Victorian Football Association then joined seven other clubs in October 1896 to form the breakaway Victorian Football League (later changed to AFL in 1990). Australian football, also called Australian rules football or Aussie rules, or more simply football or footy, is a contact sport played between two teams of 18 players on an oval field, often a modified cricket ground. Points are scored by kicking the oval ball between the central goal posts (worth six points), or between a central and outer post (worth one point, otherwise known as a "behind"). The Australian Football League (AFL) is the only fully professional sports, professional competition of Australian rules football. John Coleman (Australian Footballer)
John Douglas Coleman (23 November 1928 – 5 April 1973) was an Australian rules footballer who played for and coached the Essendon Football Club in the Victorian Football League (VFL). Coleman is widely regarded as one of the greatest-ever Australian rules footballers. In a relatively short playing career, Coleman has the second-highest goal average in the history of the VFL/AFL (with 5.48), kicking 537 goals in 98 matches; he is only eclipsed by Peter Hudson (with 5.64). As of 2022, they are the only VFL/AFL players to average more than 5 goals per game He was also known for his high-flying spectacular marks, in some cases jumping cleanly over opponents. After a knee injury ended his playing career at age 25, he returned to coach Essendon to premiership success. Coleman died in 1973, at the age of 44, of sudden coronary atheroma. Ted Freyer
Ted Freyer (20 May 1910 – 22 April 1984) was an Australian rules footballer who played with Essendon in the VFL during the 1930s. Family The sixth of the seven children of Peter Henry Freyer (1869-1945), and Mary Freyer (1871-1928), née Suffolk, Edward Laurence Freyer was born at Port Melbourne, Victoria on 20 May 1910. He married Elsie Olivia Holmes (1911-2001) in 1930. His brother, Bill Freyer, played VFL football with South Melbourne and Footscray in the mid-1920s, and his son, Robert Alan Freyer (1937-2011), played for Port Melbourne in the VFA between 1958 and 1965. The 1957 VFL Grand Final was an Australian rules football game contested between the Melbourne Football Club and Essendon Football Club, held at the Melbourne Cricket Ground on 21 September 1957. It was the 60th annual Grand Final of the Victorian Football League, staged to determine the premiers for the 1957 VFL season. The match, attended by 100,324 spectators, was won by Melbourne by 61 points, marking that club's ninth premiership victory.
