Fred Froude
Frederick Ernest Froude (3 July 1910 – 16 June 1978) was an Australian rules footballer who played with Collingwood and coached St Kilda in the Victorian Football League (VFL). Although Froude played most of his career as a half back flanker, he started as a forward and kicked 30 goals in the 1931 VFL season. He played in five grand finals for three premierships; 1930, 1935 and 1936. In 1948, nine years after retiring, Froude returned to the VFL as coach of St Kilda. Mount Lyell (Tasmania)
Mount Lyell is a mountain in the West Coast Range of Western Tasmania, Australia. Mount Lyell has an elevation of above sea level. The adjacent mountains are Mount Sedgwick to the north and Mount Owen to the south. The mountain was named by Charles Gould in 1863 after geologist Charles Lyell, a supporter of Charles Darwin. Mount Lyell was also the common short name of the Mount Lyell Mining and Railway Company. Mining activity The Mount Lyell company operations centred mainly on the shoulder between Mount Owen and Mount Lyell, and to the western side of the mountain. On the eastern side of the shoulder were the old North Mount Lyell workings, where the 1912 North Mount Lyell Disaster occurred. There was a small operation in the early days of the mining operation that was on the northern side of Mount Lyell, known as the Comstock mine. ''The Argus'' was an Australian daily morning newspaper in Melbourne from 2 June 1846 to 19 January 1957, and was considered to be the general Australian newspaper of record for this period. Widely known as a conservative newspaper for most of its history, it adopted a left-leaning approach from 1949. Brighton Football Club was an Australian rules football club which played in the Victorian Football Association (VFA). The club was based in the Melbourne suburb of Brighton, and was nicknamed the Penguins. After suffering financial hardship throughout the 1950s, Brighton moved to Caulfield and became the Caulfield Bears in the early to mid-1960s. History An advertisement in '' The Argus'' on 8 June 1859 announced a meeting to be held on the 9th of that month, at the Devonshire Hotel, to form the Brighton Football Club. There are references to an active Brighton Park club in 1867, and Brighton Football club in 1872, 1878, 1882 and 1883. Those clubs may or may not have been connected. The 1948 VFL season was the 52nd season of the Victorian Football League (VFL), the highest level senior Australian rules football competition in Victoria. The season featured twelve clubs, ran from 17 April until 9 October, and comprised a 19-game home-and-away season followed by a finals series featuring the top four clubs. The premiership was won by the Melbourne Football Club for the sixth time, after it defeated by 39 points in the 1948 VFL Grand Final Replay.
