North American fraternity and sorority housing refers largely to the houses or housing areas in which fraternity and sorority members live and work together. In addition to serving as housing, fraternity and sorority housing may also serve to host social gatherings, meetings, and functions that benefit the community. History The first fraternity house seems to have been located at Alpha Epsilon of Chi Psi at the University of Michigan around 1846. As fraternity membership was punishable by expulsion at many colleges at this time, the house was located deep in the woods. Fraternity chapter housing initially existed in two forms: lodges that served as meeting rooms and houses that had boarding rooms. The Alpha Tau Omega Fraternity House, also known as the ATO House, is a Colonial Revival building in Reno, Nevada that was built in 1929. It was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 2004. History Alpha Tau Omega (ATO) predecessor organization at the University of Nevada, Reno was the local fraternity, Phi Delta Tau, founded in 1912. It was the third fraternity at the university. and Phi Delta Tau became the ''Delta Iota chapter'' of Alpha Tau Omega in 1921. In 1921, the chapter formed the Delta Iota Building Association which purchased a house at 745 University Avenue. In 1928, the ''Delta Iota chapter'' had 45 active members and had outgrown its two-story house which could only house twenty members. The fraternity built its chapter house in 1929. Joseph William Royer (1873–1954) was a prolific architect from Urbana, Illinois who designed many prominent buildings in Urbana, Champaign, Illinois, Champaign, and beyond. His work included civic, educational, commercial, and residential buildings, many of which are listed in the National Register of Historic Places and feature a wide variety of architectural styles. Early life and education Joseph Royer was born in Urbana on August 2, 1873. He attended Urbana High School and then attended the University of Illinois, graduating with a degree in civil engineering in 1895. Alpha House is a fraternity house located at 293 Eliot Street in Detroit, Michigan. It is significant as the longtime headquarters of the Gamma Lambda chapter of Alpha Phi Alpha fraternity. The house was listed on the National Register of Historic Places on August 26, 2021. History Alpha Phi Alpha was founded at Cornell University in 1906. The organization was the first intercollegiate Greek-letter fraternity established for African American men. The fraternity expanded, and by the 1910s a number of successful Alpha Phi Alpha brothers were living in Detroit. The Gamma Lambda chapter of the fraternity was chartered on March 22, 1919.
